Gas smell from canister?

When I drive and open the passenger side window, there is a gasoline smell.
I checked under the hood and wonder if it may have to do with the evap canister? It doesnt have the hose that goes to the fender, insteadd there is a plastic thing ending with a small square platic plate, see picture.
Car is an 88 GTA 350.

Anyone know if its missing the hose or if it ias as it should be?

regards,
Hasse

Re: Gas smell from canister?

The small cap on the air port is OK, GM did it both ways. There is a small slot in the bottom of it for venting.

As for the fumes coming from the canister, that can happen. I was tuning VE tables with CCP disabled and forgot to re-enable it when done. This eventually caused a strong odor of fuel while stopped at lights or moving slowly.

So much so a couple of times I pulled over and popped the hood making sure that there wasn't any fuel leaks. It finally dawned on me what I did and enabled the CCP purging. The fuel fume smell went away.

So, if there is something causing the CCP system to not purge, that can do it.

Looking at the picture again I see which valve you are referring to. Although, I'm not sure if it should be there, haven't seen an EFI car with one there.

The tank pressure control valve below it with the Y connection, yes, that is normal.

The other thing now that I really look at the pic, is that the vacuum lines seem to be a bit worse for wear. If they are rough on the outside they should be replaced.

Problem may also be the solenoid wiring connector. Looks a little stretched, wire may be broken inside of the insulation.

I'd stick my nose in there is 'see what the nose knows.'

Re: Gas smell from canister?

Thanks, Yes the hoses are dry and I will replace them all. I found an emission diagram, and as You say, that valve-thing between the canister and throttle-body, isnt in the diagram. maybe a PO got it wrong somehow....

Re: Gas smell from canister?

Realized that there is an emission diagram under the hood...
It looks exactly like the one I posted, apart from this round valve called purge valve in the diagram, between the canister and TB.
I will follow Your advise and replace all those dried out hoses....
