Front pad decode

I went to check out a 85 camaro a guy had for sale he said the motor came out of a caprice. The code on the front is V0530cma and I couldn't really get the number off the back I think it was 507. It has center bolt valve covers so I know it's a 87 and up. I couldn't find anything.

Re: Front pad decode

Center bolt valve covers only means the heads are '87 and up... Those heads will fit on most other SBC engines.

V = Flint, MI plant
05 = 5th mo. (May)
30 = 30th day

CMA has two listings

1972..307 with, tur hydro trans, Calif, 130 HP, 2bbl carb, used in A F X bodies

1974...350, with tur hydro trans, 2bbl carb, used in A B F X bodies

Re: Front pad decode

Doesn't mean the car he pulled the engine from still had it's original engine.

All that really matters is the suffix code to give you a rough idea what kind of car it was originally in and the casting number to confirm a specific year range or to determine if it's a 4" bore block or something smaller. Suffix codes get machined off if the block has ever been decked.

Once the engine has been rebuilt, cam, intake, heads changed, it's not original any more.

Your block has a CMA suffix code which means it's either a 307 or a 350. Since it has center bolt valve covers, someone has already replaced the heads. The casting number off the block can say if it's a 307 or a 350. You'll need to get casting numbers off the heads to see what they are.

The engine isn't original so it doesn't matter what it came from.
