Advancing stock timing? Any Gains?
I know its not a 3rd gen question but it is a L69 HO question. I have a stock 1987 Monte Carlo SS, stock timing says 6*, with all of the computer controlled Carb and distributor will it be worth bumping up the timing at all? i know this was a good trick with the older cars to give you a more "seat of the pants" feel, but Im not very familiar with the OBD1 carb/dizzy set ups. any input would be great!

it would help some by maybe bumping it up a few more degrees but if you are unable to change the "initial timing" parameter in your computer it wont help much because your engine will be at say....8* advance but your computer still thinks it is at 6* which will result in your fuel being delivered into the engine at the wrong time.

Seriously, it makes no sense.
OP, the L69 chip has a fairly aggressive advance curve, so it won't tolerate quite as much static timing increase (as the lower performance CCC-Qjet cars will) until the power starts to fall off at the upper part of the advance curve and/or it detonates.
BUT.....it's definitely worth experimenting with. Gains will differ from car to car because of mechanical tolerances/variations. With the L69 chip in the car in my sig when it still had the LG4 engine, I ran about 12 degrees static timing for best performance, as measured by 1/4 mile trap speed. I'm told most L69 cars don't want quite that much, which is understandable considering the timing map in that chip.

Re: Advancing stock timing? Any Gains?
So it would be better just to enjoy what i have, I no longer live near a track to try different timing set ups for real ET changes.
