new fuel filter, now won't run right...
My '83 Z28, 305 4 bbl... just out of storage for many years, usually runs OK once it's warmed up. I just replaced the fuel filter, which was full of crap. Now it starts quickly and runs for a few seconds then dies. After a few times, won't start at all. Wait a minute or 2 and it will start again, but not run for long. I believe I put it back together correctly... not sure what to think...

Not sure on your particular filter, possible installed wrong flow direction. Also possible debris in the low idle circuit in the carb or even accelarator pump went out.

As mentioned, check the flow direction on the filter. Should be a little arrow and some wording next to it.
The easiest one first......

Thanks for the replies. I believe I did get the direction correct, but to show how little I know, I thought the check valve was part of the old filter! It was lodged in the filter pretty good so... well when I put the new filter in I left out the check valve (still have it though.)
The new filter has no gasket, just a piece of what looks like contact paper.
Thanks GT4373 for the link. I will look into maybe pulling the check valve and running an external filter? Not sure how I will go with this.

So I am on it today... Pulled the fuel filter again to make sure it's in the right direction. No check valve in this filter, so it's not that. Same problem still, starts, runs for a few secs., dies. Does this a few times then no start at all, though she sounds like she wants to go... I will do more research..

Update.... now she won't start at all.
Fuel filter is in the right direction. I turned it over with the fuel line disconnected, and gas pumps out. With a spray of starter fluid, runs for a second then dies.
Also, I sprayed in and around the carb with carb cleaner- maybe I shouldn't have? And I used to have a fast clicking noise with the key in "on" position, before it started- I don't hear that anymore. But like I said, gas is pumping into the carburator.
Any help would be appreciated. I do have a decent manual, but I am such a newb that even the manual doesn't really help sometimes. I have tried to find the low idle circuit as was mentioned before, but was unable to. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks again!

Make sure gas is getting to the engine,, Look down the barrels and see if gas shoots out while pressing the gas throttle open.. if not, Lightly Tap the carb with a rubber mallet.. Maybe the Needle is stuck in the seat.. ??? if gas shoots out, test electrical systems..
I just rebuilt a '83 carb last year with the same symptoms, turned out to be Needle stuck in Seat, plus inside was full of white goo.. A Cliff Ruggels rebuild kit to the rescue..

Thanks... I opened the throttle and no gas jets out. Tapped with a hammer and block of wood (can't find my rubber mallet haha) but still the same. I will have to keep at it. Still not sure if the fact that I can't hear a clicking when ignition is on has anything to do with it? Is that the fuel pump? I am trying to find the pump relay now...

Re: new fuel filter, now won't run right...
Depends if you have an electric fuel pump... Not sure if they had em in '83.. mine is mechanical on the front lower left on block.. to test carb or if it's been sitting for extended periods, I go to walmart and get a cheap .98 cent clear plastic restaurant style ketchup dispenser, put gas in it, then fill the carb thru the vent on top till it's full,, the carb should shoot gas out the primary's and run for a bit if started..
Edit: If it's a ccc qjet, check the connection..

Not an electric fuel pump I am pretty certain... it is a quadrajet- which connection are you referring to?
Thanks!
Thanks!
