87 IROC 305 carb camsaft help

I have an 87 IROC torn down with a rebuilt 305 bored .020. I want a fun street car so I am looking for a mild roller cam and I really just hope to change springs. Any suggestions?

Look at Herberts Cams CCH310. 220 int 220 exh 465 Lift. They have a nice selection of SBC roller cams. My dad has run Herbert cams in several different engines from mild street to track cars. I used one of their flat tappet cams once and was very pleased with it.

Thanks, that seems more aggressive than I want.

I am looking at the the Comp Cams 8-463-8 or 8-500-8 I am leaning towards the 8-500-8.

Re: 87 IROC 305 carb camsaft help

Northern Auto Parts also has a hydraulic roller cam 222-38 and its priced right at $190. 215int 215exh 470 lift. It will require valve springs but its not that aggressive maybe pulls to 5700RPM. This cam is a nice step above stock but still mild enough for stock torque converter. Herbert also has some milder grinds than I listed even though the one I mentioned is not a high performance cam its really a good street cam. Especially for a carbed engine assuming its not computer controlled.

Out of all cams mentioned so far in this thread, that one would get my vote. I certainly wouldn't go beyond that intake duration with stock TC and stock heads. Even with upgraded TC and heads, that cam would still make for a strong streetable powerband.

thanks, I called Comp and they recommend the 8-500-8 over the 464. I have the 8-500-8 in my shopping cart at Summit!
