Fuel leaking from somewhere

Well, title states a fuel leak, but it's near the alternator where it's a very strong fume that the fuel comes from... Strong enough you can notice it outside of the car just being at least 3 feet from it after it's been driven. Being noted by family members, is that the engine lost a lot of power since the leak has been noticed. It's a 3.1L LHO, '91 Camaro RS.

Also car left a puddle in the driveway of oil shortly after being driven just the other day.
Primary goal for now is to get the fuel leak fixed. Oil leak presents to be minor as the engine still seems to have plenty of oil available.

What's the best place to start in diagnosing the fuel leak?

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

Could be the charcoal canister. Mine had a strong fume smell coming in the car. Took it out and it was full of gas. Changed it and that was it. Yours could be leaking.

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

Where is it located possibly? New to cars and whatnot and learning as I fix this car. Also decided to check the fuel rail and injectors and such. Intake has fluids in it that have a very strong fume to it. Is that normal? Checking the injectors because there is small puddles present near the injectors of fuel from what I assume gives a visible yellow staining.

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

May have found your problem. If the injectors are leaking you will have a loss of power. Also check your fuel pressure regulator. If it is bleeding fuel into your vacuum it will smell really strong from the engine.

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

Sounds like the injectors are your problem. They are pretty easy to swap out, and you can get them pretty cheap.

The evap canister is on the front driver side tray (opposite the battery). Check that too just to be safe.

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

I actually want to replace the fuel injectors with what many say are great injectors, F1ZE injectors. Best place to get them?
I also seemed to fix the fuel leak issue. Just changed my fuel pressure regulator diaphragm and the fuel has stopped leaking into my vacuum lines. From the old one I swapped out, the seal gave in. It had a small cut along with was also overlapping the middle plate. My primary concern now is fixing my oil leak. Seems to be present near the distributor area.

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

Had a similar problem on my LH0. It's the O - ring on the distributor shaft. It's brittle and letting oil through. Also, get a TBI base gasket and use it at the top to insure a seal. This cured my leak.

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

So is this what I am looking for as in the distributor O-ring? http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....035762&jsn=894

I am lead to this O-Ring by navigation to it via Rockauto's tree navigation system. "Chevrolet > 1991 > Camaro > 3.1L V6 > Ignition > Distributor Seal".

The throttle body gasket is relatively new. I also have a gasket maker in case that can be made use of. (Permatex Ultra Black)

That's the o-ring wherever you get it from, below is the other I'm talking about.

So I should use both of these to ensure it is sealed?

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

Use the o-ring as stock, placed the other between the base of the distributor and the intake manifold where it sits.

Are you able to provide a picture for better understanding of how I should be placing the gasket and exactly where?

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

So basically just put the gasket right under the clamp holding the distributor shaft?

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

You have to remove the dizzy to replace BOTH seals. The FelPro seal lives right above the rubber seal in the picture.

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

Cool, just make sure when BEFORE you pull the dizzy, mark the position of the rotor and base. That way when you go to put it back in, you get it all lined back up.
Also, when you remove it, the rotor will turn a little while unmeshing with the pump gear. when you install, you will need to be rotated a little to end up where you started with marks lined up.

Re: Fuel leaking from somewhere

So I haven't updated this topic since, but I replaced the old O-Ring on the dizzy and put on that Fel-Pro distributor gasket, haven't leaked a drop of oil since.

The old O-ring was horrible. Hardened and cracked everywhere on it. Snapped like cheap plastic.

Thanks you all for the help on it!
