Sorting out A/C

Sorting out A/C
'86 Iroc 305 TPI, AC appears to be untouched from the factory, probably was never converted from R12 but have no way to tell.
When I bought the car 4 months ago, the AC belt wasn't hooked up, so I assume at some point either the pulley or the compressor went out.
I want to get the AC working again...not real knowledgeable about AC, so two options:
1. Take it to a dealer or local shop and have them sort the whole thing out and get it working again. I'm guessing this will be a $500 adventure or more (random guess for new parts, labor, refrigerant, etc).
2. Buy all the parts and do my own work. I'd be willing to give it a shot *if* the system isn't currently charged with refrigerant, but at this point I don't even know how to check. I see I can buy R134a retrofit kits. I'm very good in the garage, if there's a manual somewhere, I can figure it out--just don't want to be dumping refrigerant into the atmosphere OR find out this is going to pretty much be a wash versus taking it to a tech and having it done if I need a bunch of special tools/equipment.
What say everyone??

Re: Sorting out A/C
I just reinstalled my old AC system back into the car, Do it yourself, you will need a new condenser 85.00 new receiver dryer 34.00, orifce from a 1985 ford thunder bird, and green o rings 2 cans of ac flush
Flush the ac core and hoses and hardline don't flush the compressor
Turn the compressor upside down out of the car and drain the old mineral oil out rotate the compressor it's the clutch held in to get most of the oil out.
Refill system with ester oil not pag oiled ester will mix with mineral oil pag oil will not
Re place old o rings with the new green ones replace the old orifice with new for better cooling
For about 100 buck you can get a vacuum pump with gauges on eBay , and then use it for other projects
