Before I pull the fuel tank, fuel pump issues

I have an 89 305TBI I am bringing back to life. I don't think the fuel pump is working but I want to eliminate other possibilities before I crawl under and yank the tank and pump. I do not hear the fuel pump kicking on. I can get the engine to pop on starting fluid, so I am thinking the ecm is fine. The fuse by the battery is good, and I can feel the relay clicking. I don't really know how to test the relay but I am getting 12V on the orange wire. That seems to be the only one I am getting any voltage on with the key on or off. When I turn the key to on I feel the relay click and then about 3-5 seconds later I feel it click again.

Try feeding 12 volts directly to the pump and see if it runs.

Which wire off from the relay would I feed it to. Or which wire to the pump do I tap in to. I think there is a red, tan, and black running to the fuel pump.

At the fuel pump relay connector make sure you first have a +12V reading on a multimeter or circuit tester from the Orange wire. Then from the Fuel pump relay connector you can jump the orange wire (Hot in run) to the tan/white wire (output to fuel pump). If you had a +12V and the pump doesn't run you have a problem downstream with the wiring, connector or the pump is bad.

That is kind of what I was expecting to see. I think I have a bad pump. What should I get for a replacement so I don't have to do it again? I would like to have one that flows a bit higher then stock, in case I do end up doing some small mods in the future. I know I saw some threads on here, but cant find them. Thinking I saw something about a lt1 pump???

Being a 305 TBI you're limited, mostly because it's a waste of time and money to put money in a 305 TBI. Your options for upgrading are a 350 with efi or carb or going to a 4.8/5.3/6.0 LS platform. Put in another stock pump and upgrade engines when your ready. If you don't want to do big stuff like engine changes then throw some 4.11 rear gears in, put a grand in the suspension and just have a blast doing autocross!
