FI Tech Install 87 Camaro
Replaced a ccc-qjet system on my 87 former LG4 camaro.
Late 5.7 with vortec heads, LS beehive springs, LT4 cam and T56.
Dropped tank and installed a walbro 255 pump. Factory lines to the front. Used Dorman compression fittings to go from the stock supply and return to quick disconnect. OEM nylon fuel lines to quick disconnect fittings installed onto the throttle body with AN adapters. If the FI Tech were threaded with normal 16 instead of fine pitch I could have used an ORB boss straight to QD. At least up front. Wasn't crazy about return plumbing out the back.

Re: FI Tech Install 87 Camaro
I had the aircleaner in the shed. Was on a camaro i worked on several years ago. Didn't intend to use it here but after finding a decent filter for it decided it fits. A drop base will not work with the throttle body.
Still got some clean up to do but put over 100 miles on it so far.
Mech/Vac advance HEI from Rock Auto (like $65) on it for now. FI Tech unit is commanding the fuel pump through the stock wiring under the hush panel and controlling one of the dual fans.

VERY nice install. Any issues with the FItech learning curve? How do you like FItech?
Any disadvantages with the present stand-alone non-computer HEI operation compared operation compared to the previous arrangement with the ECM running the timing?

Re: FI Tech Install 87 Camaro
Advancing the timing a few degrees at a time in between driving it for a day. Running 89 fuel for now. May have a little more advance in it. I want to optimize what I'm running in order to get a good base line before I do any tuning to the otherwise stock HEI.
Idle speed set at 800 and it idles smoother than the q-jet did. Usually hangs around 800-850.
Cold start (below 40F) requires a few primes, warm start is instantaneous.
Biggest problem for me is the weight of the throttle return spring(s). Requires much more effort than the q-jet. If I don't get used to it soon, I may have to modify it.
Still considering installing different fuel lines to keep them on the left side. Maybe late 3800 F-body hard lines that terminated into nylon before going up into the fender well. This would let me 'factory' mount the filter underneath and keep the metal carb lines away from the exhaust heat.

ECM and ECM wire harness removed from vehicle.
I need to get some pics of my current fuel line routing posted.

Re: FI Tech Install 87 Camaro
i have the same set up but the the power adder kit.
the cold start will improve the more you drive it, mine did the same thing.
i also had a stalling issue when coming to a stop this also figured its self out within a couple of weeks.
it takes this thing some time to learn but it works quite well

Re: FI Tech Install 87 Camaro
still going strong.
the stalling issue happens when engine braking to a stop. if the throttle is not blipped before stopping it wants to quit. the system must be timed to drop the throttle opening down slowly when it senses idle speed opening on the throttle position sensor. if i let it engine brake for this duration at no throttle opening then let off the clutch it has a tendency to cut off. it may learn not to and I've perhaps adjusted my driving habits to prevent the situation. this is with a T56.
on start up it seeks a high idle then slowly ramps down to curb idle speed over a few seconds. a bit disconcerting on hot re-starts especially with a louder exhaust. plans call for replacing my hedders and re-installing a cat, which is missing now. the hedders now dump through a 3 in straight pipe into a magnaflow muffler with stock tips. I do miss the warm start up that went straight to a low, rumbling idle.
i just started driving it again after letting it sit most of the summer due to an accidentally discharged AC system. got it charged back up a few weeks ago and the Fitech has no issue maintaining a consistent idle with or without the AC running.
i've run new QD lines but still want to re-locate my filter to underneath, near the tank. don't like the filter in the bay with the additional opportunities for leaks. will post pics soon.
compared to the ccc-qjet that ran it, it idles better and has power throughout the band. WOT is probably about the same.

Re: FI Tech Install 87 Camaro
the throttle return issue was solved by getting the bronze adapter for the larger 'holley' hole on the throttle arm that is further away from the throttle fulcrum.
