TUNE-UP TIME!: Spring almost here...

Although (atleast here where I live) its a little early for a tune-up, it is time for some preparation. We all know what is involved with the usual "thorough tune-up": plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil, oil filter, fuel filter (and possibly a new coil/module). I personally can't wait to get a tune-up and see what power will be unleashed. I want to get it in the spring, maybe March. Right now it isn't snowing much... well not at all, but it sure is cold! So I'm gonna wait, but I want to be prepared.

So I want to know what all of yas think are the best "tune-up parts" there are to get?

1. PLUGS: I was thinking AC Delco Platinum...
2. WIRES: I really was unsure of these, MSD?...
3. CAP: I was unsure of these, but I heard to get ones with brass terminals...
4. ROTOR: Same as the Cap, I was unsure, but heard to get brass terminals...
5. OIL: I heard that Mobil 1 is great, I currently have like Pennzoil 5w-30 (I don't think thats synthetic either, arrrgh)...
6. OIL FILTER: I was thinkin Fram?...
7. FUEL FILTER: I was thinkin Fram or K&N, if they manufacture fuel filters?...
8. COIL/MODULE: I was once again unsure of this also...

So what are you going to get for your tune-up? Which products do you recommend? What are the pros and cons of these products?
Thanks, all help would be appreciated... I'm sure it would benefit not only me, but everyone.

I have installed those TPI airfoils, and let me tell you, that is the best $40 you can spend! You do have a TPI don't you? If you replace the ignition coil, I recommend the MSD replacement. It fits the stock coil bracket and the harness plugs right in. It costs abit more($35) but is worth it. Same with the module, go with the MSD replacement. MSD spiral core wires, 8.8mm. I think that MSD even has a cap/rotor kit. Check with Summit Racing, you could probably get everything from them. I like the AC Delco RapidFire plugs, but the platinums would be another good choice. I use Fram filters for everything except for the K&N air filters.

One other thing to consider replacing is the pickup coil inside the distributor. I replaced mine last year and everyone I know with TPI's had to replace it around 100,000 miles. They are about $10, but you have to remove the distributor and pull the shaft out to replace it. Good luck.

MSD makes good everything imho. I have msd distributor/cap/rotor/coil. Don't buy fram stuff, stick with ac delco. Mobil 1 synthetic has been proven to be one of the best oils to use.

Don't be surprised if a tune up doesn't "unleash" any power...

Is it really that bad of an idea to put synthetic oil in a high mileage engine? I always hear about it, but can someone explain to me why it isn't a good idea? or are those people that say that full of it?

Wait, I thought synthetic was the way to go no matter if high mileage or not. Synthetic is bad???

People always told me that in high mileage engines there is a build up that kinda keeps things sealed, and putting in a good synthetic would clean out that buildup and possibly cause problems. I dunno, but that's what I heard. Anybody think they were full of it?

carter89RS: Did you use Mobile 1 Tri-synthetic or normal Synthetic?

Tri-synthetic and a Fram x2 filter, also I changed the oil again after only 1,500 because i have heard that when you switch the dino oil that built up in your engine breaks loose and can clog the filter.

A side note about replacing ignition modules. If you are going to spend the money on a "performance" igntion module, don't get the accel unit. It SUX. I did a full tuneup on my trans am right after i bought it and put the accel module in there and right after my car had a bad hard-start problem and a tach problem. Well i threw the 'ole delco unit back in there and it fires right up and the tach doesn't blank after 3500 like it did with the accel unit. Can't say anything about the MSD's though. Oh yeah replacing sparkplugs is a ***** so make sure to put some good ones in there and remember to gap them correctly.

I use: ACDelco oil filter and plugs, Taylor wires, MSD ignition products, Mobil1 tri-synthetic formula (Wal-Mart sells 5 quart bottles for $10 less than if you bought 5 single-quart bottles!), take out the ol' K&N cleaning kit. Don't overlook the breather and PCV system as well. And the tranny fluid and screen is good to do if it's been more than 35k since the last time.

One....FRAM suck as far as oil filters....ACDelco are much better AND CHEAPER. I would go for ACDelco Rapidfires.....Just looka round on topics about plugs. Wires....and good set of wires will do, I run Accell 8.8.

A note on the automatic transmissions.

I have followed this basic rule of thumb for autos...Don't **** with them at ALL. Everytime I had one of mine get their fluid chagned...If i did it my self or had some one else do it that acted funny. We currently have a 91 lumina with 130 and I have never changed the auto fluid......runs strong. Just a thought.
