So you beat a car with a measly 215 hp single overhead cam motor with horrible head flow characteristics, with 69 less cubic inches than yours, and that doesn't even get into it's powerband until past 4000 rpm...how very proud you must be.

Re: 5.0 mustang vs 350 camaro

just for an example
i been borrowing my fathers 89 iroc 305 tpi 33k miles ceramic headers magnaflow 3inch cat flowmaster exhaust
he wanted to see if his 08 pontiac Torrent Gxp awd 8k miles and completly stock was faster we went from a dig and it was dead even till 65 or so
not bad but i dont exactly call the torrent gxp a fast car what i proves is todays cars are much faster then they used to be so no thirdgens are not faster then 80-90% of whats out there the same iroc was beat on the freeway by a 03 grand am GT lol
they certainly feel faster then they are with all the tq they make but the just dont have the hp to compete with todays preformance cars unless heavily modded

Re: 5.0 mustang vs 350 camaro

This isn't my 3rd Gen but rather my 79 camaro. I was 18 and first car was a 79 camaro, 350 with a Rochester quadra jet an posi. I had gone away to bootcamp and my military school and was back on leave. I was out with my girlfriend for a drive an this pepto bismal pink VW bug comes up next to me at the light and starts reving his motor... my girl says take him! I'm like, I'm not gonna race a bug, I have a 350 and he has a little 4 cylinder.... I said fine.... light turns grin I floor it and all I saw was a license plate that said pepto.... I was so embarrassed! I followed him into the mall parking lot an this old 40 yr old (I'm now 41) started smiling at me.... the bastard had that little motor maxed out.... I was taught to respect the little motors that day! Of course I would like to find that old geezer an see how he does against my magnum....grin...

It is, by definition, a handicapped 350.

My L03 got 20 mpg in mostly city driving though? I think that's pretty efficient.

And remember, your choked out granny motor L03 still made more power than an 82 Z28 did. Those swirl port heads were specifically meant to give you V8 torque and great gas mileage and they are GREAT heads, they just dont make horsepower. Expecting them to is like trying to use a screwdriver to hammer a nail.

I may get some flack for this, but I honestly think that if the information were out there and available for people to make informed choices, a properly done TBI system would outperform a hopped up TBI at a drag strip. You'll get better fuel atomization in the very low RPM's where carbs just dont work as well, and then you get all the benefits of fuel injection (although with the drawbacks of a wet-flow system), but as long as you can get injectors that are big enough and fuel pressure high enough, it's just a matter of getting a throttle body that can flow enough air into your motor.

Anyway, you cant buy the base V8 and be mad that it's slow, that's not the point. It sounds great and gets pretty good gas mileage and is a wonderful street engine. Plenty of down low torque when you want it. It'd be great for mud-truckin probably.

And one last thing.. Displacement does not make horsepower. Displacement makes torque. Horsepower is how fast that motor can spin that torque. (HP = Torque x RPM basically) Your 305 makes more torque than that 302, it just cant spin it as fast.
HP is just a form of torque HP is just the amount of torque applied over time (1 HP= 33,000 ft-lbs per min)
