86 iroc-z vs 03 540i
ok so my friend has a 540i bmw(v8) sport package. of coarse hes the cocky type so he calls my car slow.. i have an 86 Iroc-z with a 305 tpi but with a couple of mods.. my friend "CLAIMS" he beat a porsche n an evo.. i understand the porsche cuz they not tht fast but an EVO?? i dnt think so.. well every time he talks smack, i stay quiet.. but i think i can take him.. i have a superchip, corvette servo in trans with a b&m ratchet shifter, edelbrock headers,3" catback ,accel super coil, accel wires, bosch platinum plugs, k&n filters, and i made a ram air nose(does great on the top end). Oh my engine is cammed and i have 3.73 gears.. will he beat me? or can i go ahead n talk alil smack rite back at him?

He's got you in the horsepower department but otherwise its roughly the same between the two in torque and weight with you maybe having a little bit more torque. Keep it short and get a good launch and you might take him, but the longer the race is the more he'll pull away from you.

Re: 86 iroc-z vs 03 540i
It really depends in what state of tune your car is in. I have taken one of them 540is before and purely out powered it in 3rd gear. They have decent hp but are also heavy. You have the torque and weight advantage. If your car is in good tune, you will most definitely give him a good run with the possibility of winning. If you thing your car runs well, I would not shy away from the race.

This is a tough one to call, he has more hp than you, but are probably pretty close in torque.
I say get a good launch, keep the race short, and you might have him.

Re: 86 iroc-z vs 03 540i
In all honesty, he will beat you pretty good I think. I come from the modded 305 family. I was cammed (bigger than yours) with headers, intake, chip, exhaust, and ported TPI (plus I was a 5 speed). My car would not stand a chance against an 03 540i. BMW's are made to go fast. You don't expect it, but most of those big 4 doors (ie mercedes, BMW, jaguar) are all pretty fast. Thats what you pay for when you buy them things. I'd do some more mods and then try it. And by the way, EVO's are not too quick stock. I can see him taking one from a roll, or even off the line if the EVO had a shitty start. Best of luck if you do race him.....what the heck, if he wins, you know to do some more mods, haha!

Re: 86 iroc-z vs 03 540i
An 03 540i sport is a 3800 lb car. The sport is a mid 14 sec car in the quarter mile. It makes about 290hp and a tad bit over 320 ft-lb torque. This is in the realm of a stock l98 f-body as far as performance is concerned. A camed lb9 with supporting mods and a good wide band tune, not a mail order chip, should be able to handle it without too much trouble.

Now I dont know what year this car was but I had a guy in a 518 totaly whoop me one day. I dont know how much of a comparison that is, probably not much. I dont feel too bad about it tho because I had 2:48 gears in the car with a 28 inch tall tire on it. Sounds odd I know but I put that crap on there to throw the speedo off to get out of a ticket.I wish I could find the guy now that I have 3:42's back in the car

Wow OLD thread.
For the record, I don't know my BMW's, but one morning last year, I raced a late 90's early 00's 5 series and we were door to door (ran from a dig to about 65-70 ish). No one was was gaining. I ended up lifting due to the lanes merging.
At the time I was a a stock L98 auto 3.45 gear.

Those should run around 14.0-14.5 97-100 or so in the 1/4 depending. Right around stock times for say a stock L98 Vette
Dont underestimate todays heavy 4 door European cars some of them are stupid fast and silent as the night doing it.
Always fun to play with something faster than you though.
Running slower cars is boring

Re: 86 iroc-z vs 03 540i
Some 5 series have the 4.4 or 4.8 liter V8's, The lower model 5's have the 3.0 straight six that not all that great in the heavy car. And tuned down compared to the ones in the M3's. So if it says 525 youre good. 540i its a V8 etc....
Ive owned 4 BMW's, including one with a 4.4 V8 and a bolted up E36 M3. So im kinda familiar with them.

Re: 86 iroc-z vs 03 540i
I have a 2002 330i, sport package, 5 speed, all the goodies. It craps on Hemi Chargers, boosted Hondas, pretty much anything around here. 3.0 straight 6. 0-60 in the mid 5's, quarter in the high 13's. A 540i is going to demolish a 305tpi. Even a 350tpi. Much more stable car at speeds, too.
