Anyone raced a diesel?

Well, I'm making this post because I'm curious how others have done, if my car sounds like it did what it should, and because I love this board and I really want to make a post in it lol.

Anyway, the other night I was driving home from school, roughly 9:30 p.m. I pulled up at a stop light next to a crew cab Duramax, at least a 2008 model. They had the windows down and I could hear them stop talking as soon as they realized I was there. The light changed and I accelerated normally, which is usually a little faster than some others, but nothing big. I then heard the diesel's turbo whine and a roar in my right ear, so I immediately punched it and we took off. The car stayed in second the whole time from maybe 15 to 60 or so. Sometimes it doesn't downshift on it's own and when I get into the moment I fail to pay attention to that. I'm usually keeping an eye out on traffic etc. He stayed up at my rear quarter the whole time, until I got to 4500 rpm, then he got to my door. My car shifts late, so it didn't shift till 5200 or so, but when I did, I immediatedly started pulling away. Unfortunately, very shortly after hitting 3rd I let off because I was already at 75 and getting to another traffic light, and I didn't want to get close to other cars (no one was near us). I didn't get to really pull ahead. He kept going, then I ended up passing him because I didn't want to be held up by the slow car he ended up behind and I gave him the thumbs up.

I know my car isn't fast so I wasn't surprised it was so close, but I was kind of curious on how you guys think that outcome was. It seems to get the lead when it hit's 3rd. I looked up the specs on the diesel and they seem to be good for mid to high 15s in the quarter. Has anyone else raced a diesel? Cummins, 7.3, Duramax, VW lol? Honestly, I would like to put a new 700R4 in it with a shift kit. I think it would make a difference in a race that close.

I remember once I raced an Explorer sport trac at around a 50 mph roll. Stayed together 'till I hit third, then I was gone. It better beat a 4.0 v6 lol!

I forgot to mention that from first to second at wot, it won't shift 'till 5500, so I can let off the gas anywhere from 4500 to 5k and get back on it and it will shift, but I can only do that going into 3rd if I do it right at 5 or 5100. I'm sorry If I sound simple typing all this, I'm tired and I'm having a bit of trouble.

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

Man some of those diesel trucks are ridiculous when you get someone who likes to make them fast. My buddy's dad has a 2006-ish cummins and he's got intake, chip, trans and all this stuff that puts down 600 hp and 1000 ft lbs of torque. Burns all four tires for about 50 ft. His truck is ridiculous. But for the most part they're not all that fast. I personally, have raced a few ford power strokes and beaten them from 30 mph easy.

There is some sort of newer diesel 4x4 running 12.3 in the 1/4 at the local track I go too.

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

Both of those trucks sound totally insane guys! Thanks for the replies. My dad has a 7.3L with a banks kit and it hauls, I don't think it could take a tpi car, but I bet it runs a low 16. Not bad for a vehicle that large. It can also tow a 32ft trailer up a summit at 70.

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

I havent had the luxury to run against one but I know how easy it is to make those diesel trucks fast..I remember a few years ago I was out cruising with a buddy in his 92 vette that has exhaust and tune on it and we pulled up next to a ford diesel truck.Low and behold it was my friends cousin in the truck and he said that vette is going to see what ford diesel lights look like very shortly..and boy he wasnt kidding.Light turned green and both punched it and man do those turbo diesels scream as he light all 4 tires and pulled from the vette with ease. When we did catch back up and laughed a lil he told us he just bought the truck new and instantly put a bully dog in it and full exhaust.he says its mostly the bully dog that wakes it up..and seeing him demonstrate the programmer from stock to all out is very noticeable from the smoke it lets out lol.

Oh on a side note..that diesel truck went through 2 transmissions shortly after using his aftermarket parts.Luckily it was covered under warranty when he would swap the stock parts back on before sending it back to the dealership lol

Ahahahaha that's clever! I heard that Hemi Rams blow their transmissions quicker than most because of the power.

It kinda sucks around here because most of the cars to race are some very expensive, fast cars. I always hear about people on this forum racing fart can Hondas and blowing the doors off them, but there aren't many here. Many people have low 14 and 13 second cars. I guess I'm the just the one that doesn't have any money lol. It's kind of sad when you think of the fact that my Camaro couldn't pull away from what must have been a stock diesel, but at the same time I don't have any shame because A.) I didn't get beat, and B.) That truck probably cost ten times what my car is worth. Either way, it was fun. I want to get into the 14 second range though.

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

well around here diesels are the new thing thats "in". im here to tell ya, be careful some of em will easily smoke you (pun intended lol) heck i have a stock 05 f250 with heavy 20" chrome wheels and 33x13.50 tires and i can smoke the tires anytime i want. diesels have really come a long way and it doesnt take much nowadays. just a chip and exhaust and you could have over 600ft/lbs of torque, heck stock my truck is rated at 500 at like 2000 rpm.

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

My dad has a 04 Dodge 3500 Cummins. Long bed king cab. Not a light truck. He put an edge chip in it and a K&N intake and the chip said he did a 14.4 quarter mile in 2WD. There were a few bends and stuff as well so it wasn't a straight line...

I honestly don't think I would race one.

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

I raced a 4 door duramax in my z28. 350 G92 car, vortec heads and intake, catback. I beat him by about 1 1/2 cars. I should be very high 13's. It was lifted with big tires. The big trucks are getting fast.

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

Yeah all I can figure is that I just got lucky and ended up racing a stock one. Kinda surprising I didn't lose, but cool cool. I'm either going to port and polish some heads and install a mild cam (gotta please the smog police ) and a ram air and call it good for a while, or (if I have the money/time) invest in an L98 out of a Corvette and basically do the same. I see them on Craigslist for 500-1000 and it wouldn't take much to install one, at least compared to doing an Lt1 or something. It's my daily driver so I don't want to screw with it too much.

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

ive really only raced one diesel and that was my buddys 04-05 ram he has the upgraded chip bigger turbo trans pretty much everything i went with him to have it dyoed and it put down about 625 rwhp and 1210 rwtq and i was in my 85 z/28 305 tpi intake flowmaster cat back and 700r4 with a shift kit lets just say all i saw was a cloud of black smoke and his tail lights once he decided i had enough and hit his brakes... it made a pretty good sleeper though he had a bully dog tuner that pretty much at the press of a button he could bring it back to a pretty close to stock tune the truck looks bone stock other than the tinted windows and smoke stacks.. i always got a kick out of watching him stomp ppl a in a big ext cab truck....

Re: Anyone raced a diesel?

when I first started driving my camaro to high school, one of the rich kids was driving his 06 F-250 powerstroke, exhaust, chipped, etc, even with the l98, I couldnt break away from him on the highway, we went up to 90 and he was at my rear quarter the whole time. My brother in law who owns a 94 Mustang GT learned his lesson about messing with diesel trucks when got spanked by the owner of a local diesel performance shop who was driving his 900hp Ram
