1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

In this video I take my 1991 Firebird to 190 MPH. I've been working on the car ever since I got it last summer. I hope to push it to new heights soon. Please check it out and tell em what you think, and if you have any suggestions please tell me.

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

Is your speed scanner correct? What does your speedometer read? For some reason it doesn't look like you're doing 190mph......what are your mods?

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

Seems like a fantastic road to do a high speed pull on!

Anyways whats the setup as I dont see how this is "power adder" related.

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

I have been 240mph and over 200 many times. That didn't look like 200 to me.
As said above, scanner correct? set on KMPH and not MPH? Maybe its the camera?
What all is done to the car?

Directly into the sun..... wow. People on the road..... Jesus... Doing it on the street you live on...... Just plain stupid.

Sorry, I cant stand stupidity and thats purely all this is. I'm glad you worked hard on your car and its fast and all that good stuff but lets think about things before we do them.

And this is what 190-200 mph looks like on a 2 lane road....

I ran a modded 02 SS LS car up over 150 a few years back and I was nervous to even take my eyes off the road and look at the speedo. I say this guy was doing 85mph

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

LMAO.... Send your "speed scanner" back or no, just throw it away. It's off by more than 100 mph.

That wasn't even 100 mph, much less 196 mph.

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

I just had time to look over this video better...

At the fastest point in your video, you was doing 68.18 MPH

Federal guide lines for road markings... The dashed lines are 10' long and the space between them are 30' long.

In your vid, your car was moving the fastest at 1.01 to 1.05 range. In that 4 second space I counted 10 dashed lines going by the nose of the car

10) 10' lines = 100'
10) 30' empty space between lines = 300'
Total 400'
4 Seconds time

So that is 100 feet per second... Doing the math of 400' in 4 seconds that comes up to 68.18 mph

1 Foot per Second = 0.681818 Miles per Hour
100 foot per second = 68.18

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

Faster than 68 in my estimation but I'm not buying 196.

Mount the camera inside & run it again.

EDIT:

On second thought don't! Life's too short to end it doing something stupid. You've got nothing to prove to us, just enjoy the car without taking the chance of blowing a tire at high speed and ending up in somebody's house! If you want to do high speed runs there are track days for that - do so with proper safety equipment and inspections.

Nice calc's....I remember reading somewhere a loooong time ago where at a certain speed, at those spacing's of the lines, they went solid from the view in the car.. Just cant remember the speed. Oh well.

On another note.......

136 mph for me on a 20 mile STRAIGHT stretch of 4 lane divided desert highway was enough for me. I got skeered and shut r down!

You beat me to posting that math. I was figuring it out on paper while I was reading.

Having seen 160mph+, that was not 200mph.

I've been building my GTA for a while, and 200mph+ is one of the things I want to achieve with it. My gearing is about right, and the engine's power band matches it. 200mph is 6800rpm in 5th on my M28 T56. But I still don't enough power to get there. Then again, unless I start participating in the Silver State Classic, there really isn't a place to safely attempt it.

200mph = ~300ft/second. Or a football field every second.

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

So to everyone that said that the video looked slow you're right. The go pro decided that it would record at the wrong frame rate, and therefore it looks really slow. To the people that say i was traveling 60 mph, that's incorrect because at 60 fps it would half my speed and I would actually be traveling 80-90. I achieved this through compressed air supercharging (look up motor trends article to see the benefits) with race fuel. Also to the person that called me an idiot, first, i was going the speed limit when passing the biker, and i slowed back down after i saw the jeep. Second, sunglasses were invented hundreds of years ago. Third, it's not my street, and it's a country road miles and miles from any town or police. I appreciate your assumptions. And i have verified through my gps speed gauge that the speed is correct, no matter how much math you do on the forum. Here's the link to the corrected video, sorry there's no sound but i was in a hurry to upload it so I didn't seem like a liar.

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

If anyone is doing 190 on a public, one-lane, asphalt road, that has no shoulder.....at that point they're an idiot. A video only validates the stupidity.

Sorry man, but that's the truth. There's really nothing to defend.

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

I believe your referring to the comment that I left. Let me clarify for you.

I didn't call anyone an idiot. Nor stupid. I don't like really using neither words when referring to someone. My paps has brain damage so after the accident, I rarely use them. ONLY when called for.

I did say your actions are "purely stupidity" in which they are. I was not trying to offend you in any way. I myself was a youngster at one time and have my fair share of "stupid" actions.

You clearly are pulling out of a driveway (stupidity). Cant see if it is a house or a shop, but, from the film, I see a mailbox, then soon after, houses on both sides of this very narrow road. So I think I can safely assume that it is a house that you are pulling out from. Now, whether or not its "your" house or a "friends" is unknown.

After 34 seconds of watching and wondering if you are going to do this amazing speed on this road or, where in fact this event is taking place, I notice you are starting to speed up. Around 38 seconds, I see a pretty decent corner approaching and think, "Man, he's doing it on this road... (wow.)" Around 41 seconds, I see you fly past a pedestrian on a bike(Jesus) and at the same time, realize the sun is going to be right in your eyes. (As a seasoned driver, I know that this time of year, with the sun low in the sky, is one of the worst times of the year to be drive east in the morning and west in the evening, especially, if your windshield has the slightest amount of gunk on it. In fact, there are about 15% more accidents this time of the year compared to summer.)

So, 41 seconds into the film, you are traveling, I'd guess around 60 or so, Giver take 10 mph, passed the biker, and rounded the corner. After that you can see you accelerating. You accelerated for 14.5-15 seconds before you let off. So, you started off around 65 mph and had it to the floor for around 15 seconds. You went from 65 mph to 196 mph in about 15 seconds.131mph in 15 seconds. That is P1 Mclaren speed bro.(well maybe not but close) It goes 0-200 in 20 sec...1300 hp and 1000 tq.

Again, I'm not trying to put you down in any fashion. Actually its just the opposite. (I Cant save everyone) In fact, from the video, your car looks like it is really nice. I bet you have worked hard on it to get it the way you like it. But,you can always replace it. You cant replace you. Imagine how your family would feel. Imagine how they would feel if you were fine but killed someone else....

BOTTOM LINE, if you know your car goes x amount of speed, who cares what other people think. But if you post it claiming a pretty insane amount of speed, meaning going that fast is insane. YOU WILL DIE. With some exceptions, you better be able to back it...... AND you should easily be able to, cause remember, you know it goes x fast. Dude, I bet 90% of people here bs about hp numbers and all sorts of stuff. Same as in fishing, hunting, banging the opposite sex....what ever, its in out blood. Good times.

I apologize if I offended you. I simply don't want to see/read/hear anyone/you get hurt/killed. Who's the dude here with the twin turbo, 9.7 sec car @169.4657463547 or what ever,(Please correct me bro if you want, What did I say to you just last week. Who ever, feel free to look. It doesn't look anything like what I said to you, but it shows concern for a fellow car guy. And when going at such fast speeds....I dont know, I guess the older I get the more cautious I get. Don't get me wrong, I love going fast, But there is a time and place.

Another example for you of what your claim is up against.

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

So based off of what Night said, 10' yellow dash with 30' inbetween. I am trying to figure how many feet apart the telephone poles are. There are ten yellow dashes between each pole where he is going the fastest, around 2 sec per pole.

10-10' yellow dashes= 100'
9-30' inbetween yellow dashes=270'
So the poles are roughly 370'-400 apart.
370 divide by 2= 185fps.
185(60)=11100fpm
11100(60)=666000fph
666000 divide by 5280= 126.1363636363636 mph.
and @400'pole spacing=136.36mph

Class dismissed

Sorry, I cant stand stupidity and thats purely all this is. I'm glad you worked hard on your car and its fast and all that good stuff but lets think about things before we do them.

And this is what 190-200 mph looks like on a 2 lane road....

Love that video, and love Within Temptation the music that backed the video.

TT is no joke racing, no room for error.

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

i've been 143mph on the GPS with mine and it looks faster than that, i didn't have all that room ( i live in NJ lol) but i'm sure i would run out of gear at about 160 with 3.43 and a 700R4

Re: 1991 Firebird goes 190 MPH

Back in the 80's, Car and Driver covered a story about Gale Bank's attempt to build a 200 MPH Firebird. Based on what he found necessary, compared to the minimal modifications you've described, you haven't even come close.
