I searched and came up with no decent answers. This is a basic question...but...

I have an Accel 300+ ignition box and stock distributor. What are the best fitting, best brand ignition wires for me?

I have been looking at the Accel Extreme 9000 wires, but they only have a set for the LT1. With a stock TPI and SLP 1 5/8" headers, will the LT1 wire set work?

Please post with all 8 mm wire experiences...

I recomend using cut your own wire sets with headers. I use the summit wires (which are made by Taylor) and Made for You wire looms with my SLP 1 3/4" headers. This setup ensures you will not burn a wire on the header. I've used the wires twice and love them. They seem to be more durable than the MSD superconductors i have used before. They are also easy to build, but the msd tool and instructions are better.

The thing of it is that I am very good with electrical things in general, but I want a custom fit set of wires...

What about brands?...anyone have a set from an LT1 that works on TPI?

My mechanic installed mine when I had a new engine put in my car. Yes the wires came with a rubber boot at the spark plug. I asked my mechanic about this as I had headers installed at that time. He advised that as long as the rubber boot was 1" from the header it would be fine. The rubber boots do not seem to be suffering from exposure to heat from the header after a year and a half later.

I also use cut to fit wires the accel 8.8 I don't have headers yet but I have yet to find performance wires that fit my car its an 86' iroc

I'm also using the MSD 8.5" Super Conductor wires. The set is ready-made for '87-up SBC's. They route in the factory location, underneath the headers. They have a heavy-duty boot on the sparkplug end. Check www.msdignition.com for the exact part number.

LT1 wires will not work at all, since the distributor in on the front on the motor; the wires will be too short.

Interesting, i had exactly the opposite expirence. The MSD boots and wires became brittle near the headers.

Any reason why you want a custom fit set.

A good set (any brand) of 8mm wires with 90 deg boots and using LT1 metal boot protectors will solve any burnt boot problem when using headers.

I have MSD's cut to fit. I like them and have had no problems. I have to get another set because I cut them the wrong lenght. (Mostly too long)

I'm running the Accel 300+ and using the Accel Extreme 9000 wires. I've been really happy with the wires. They used to make a custom fit set for the L98. I ordered mine thru Summit a few years ago. It looks like they may have discontinued them and are just producing the LT1 version. Universal fit is the only option we get now.

i use pretty much two options, and they always work great. AC Delco fitted wires, for using with cast iron manifolds. If using headers, moroso blue max fitted, 8mm. Boots fit great, and they fit well, the only color available fitted is blue though. Hold up to temp well, been around for years, and price is decent. If having trouble with heat, LT1 heat shield work well, as someone already said.

Cant u just use 6inch. asbestos wire covers at the base of the wires to the head? thats what i used on my t/a with edelbrock tubular exhaust and i never had a burnt wire. Also, Does anyone know a good set of wire looms for hi rise proform center bolt valve covers?

One of the problem with some wires is the effect on them when constantly exposed to header/exhaust heat over long periods of time.

Initially it may seem that the wires are doing well beling close to the header/exhaust, but the constant exposure to the high heat conditions will make many of them (both boots and the wire itself) become brittle.

Shortly afterward you'll begin to experience arching.

From what I've read, the best wires for living under the high heat conditions are Jacobs with the ceramic ends and LiveWires. Both are rather pricey though.

I'm running Accel 300+ Racing Wires that I picked up during Super Chevy at Indy last month. As an added benefit, my gas mileage improved almost three miles per gallon on my return trip to TX from Indy. My old wires showed no sign of being bad either.

Maybe there's something to Accel's claim of more spark energy to the plugs with the 300+s.

Over the years I've run many different brands of wires and I've found that the most trouble-free wires are those with the factory terminated ends.

I got some Accel 300+ wires cheap because they were returned - they the type you cut to length yourself.

I currently have stock exhaust but want to go headers. Should I get some cheap wires for now until I get the headers, and then cut the 300+ wires for headers, or should I cut the 300+ wires now?

Also, should I follow the stock routing along the firewall or just go in over the valve covers?

My engine is a stock 305 TPI and it has a miss under load that I'm trying to fix. It has 74K miles on it and I believe it's never had a tuneup in it's life.

I was in a similar situation. I bought the taylors and cut them for the maniolds, then got headers 3 months later and bought and cut a new set. I would say you should get some stock replacment wires if you plan of getting headers soon, then just use your 300+ units. I had the wires all of the place temporarily because i knew i was getting headers soon. Getting wires into the stock routing and looms is kinda hard or at least time consuming, but it looks nice, hidden. With heads i would use the made for you wire looms like in my pic above. It makes them easy to keep off the headers.

i use old coat hangars to fabb up my own wire sets. They work great until you get close to them with the car on. I guess its just their way of saying that they are working!

i just ordered the accell TPI wires 300+

i've used the 300+ wires before and think they have been just awesome.

i'll see how these fit this weekend, but we dont have headers on the car
