Removing TPI intake

I have an oil leak from the back of my intake. I need to replace the intake gasket and need to know if I should tackle this on my own. I've never done this before but it doesn't seem like its a nightmare to do. I don't have $500 to take it to a shop but I do have time. Does anyone have any tips on how I should do this? It looks like I can get by without removing the valve covers, true? Removing the TPI doesn't look to difficult either. Any advice? Thanks.

I just did my first intake swap tuesday and it was easy. Take off the TB and plenum. along with the runners. Mark the distributer and pull that label your injecorts and unclip those. Remove the 4 fuel rail bolts and disconnect the gas line at the front of the engine and pull the injecotrs out. Remove the coolent temp sensor to drain soem of the antifreeze in the manifold. Then take out the intake bolts and lift up. Some antifreeze will get into the engine, but dont worry. Clean the heads of the old gasket lay a 3/8 bead (more is better) of RTV in the front and rear of the block. Lay your gaskets into place and put new intake on. tighten bolts to 35LBS and your set.

Just remember, there are two bolts holding the runners on that come from the opposite side as the other runner bolts. One is back by the distributor, the other by the IAC under the TB. The back one can be a real pain in the *** . I other words don't force anything. If they runners or plenum feel really tight coming off, don't grab the hammer, take a second look and make sure you didn't miss a bolt.
Lay that RTV in pretty thick and drop the intake straight down on the block, don't slide it around. Now would be a good time to clean up the insides of the intake, runners and plenum! good luck.

you can leave the tb on the plenum if you do the tb bypass mod. might as well anyway. also while the plenum is off, port it , also relocate your mat sensor and put on an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. torque the bolts down like this -->

what do i need to do for a tb bypass mod? also, i was considering getting the plenum ported while i have it off. is there really much performance gain doing this? how much do you think it would cost to have em ported? thanks again.

port the plenum yourself, all you need is a drill and a few 1$ bits (rasp and sanding stone). for the tb bypass get dayco part #...(be right back) cant find the # but this shows the "quick ugly"way to do it. https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/index.shtml

bleed??? im not sure what you mean.. but when you put the runners back on it is simple.. just bolt them 15-20ft/lbs. start from the inside bolts and go out . good luck

One other word of advice... When you pull your intake and old gaskets, the gaskets are probably the kind that have the little metal retainers integrated to hold the gasket in place during installation, so be careful of those and make sure you account for every one of those after you get your intake off. I had a couple of mine pop off during removal, and that's how I discovered those...
