another 91 Z28 305 question.....

i am looking into buying a 91 z28 with a 305. but people keep telling me to go with 350 because the 305s are junk. does anyone have any personal experience etc? or are these people i know just misinformed or are the 91 305 engines, in fact, junk?? other than hp & torque & overall power, what are the disadvantages to havin a 91 305 vs 91 350 & also what are the things that are in the 305's favor? any help is greatly appreciated.

No, it's not junk. The people you've been talking to are A$$es.
What advantages does a 305 have over a 350? None that matter. Maybe a slightly longer lifespan due to the smaller bore, but that's it. Disadvantages are less power, and doesn't respond as well to mods. That doesn't make a 305 TPI a bad engine. Far from it, it's a damn decent, capable engine. It just isn't as good as a 350.
A Speed Density 305 TPI car runs between 15.4-14.4 stock, depending on whether it's a single cat auto car, a single cat 5 speed car, or a dual cat 5 speed car (which has better gears).

I wouldn't say they are junk at all. There are people running some pretty quick 305s. A little while back there was a long post about the 305 lasting forever. But if you do the same mods to a 350 that you do to a 305 you will most likely see better results with the 350.
Is it a stick or auto?

the 305 is a perfectly damn good motor. The corvettes alluminum heads make more power on my 305 than it would in a 350. I must admit a 350 would make more torque but the 305 weighs less more practical and better on gas than the 350. Stay with the 305 youll love it.

How does a 305 weigh less that a 350? They are in the same block. If anything the 350 would weigh less because of the larger bore having more metal removed. Though I think this weight difference is reall insignificant.

The 305 is a great engine to modify becasue people think its junk. I used to love the looks I got from people when I said. Its just a 305. hahaha it was great. Plus if you lose you have an excuse to and most people who don't know their head from a hole in the gound will accept that your car is slow only because it has a 305.

I think the TPI 305 makes a great street engine. I don't think that anyone who has seen my TA in action on the street will call my 305 "junk".

Kyle F,
they are not the same block. The complete 305 engine is a little lighter than the 350.

The 305 is not junk. It is a very good engine that responds as good as any to the right changes.
The major advantage of racing a 305 come in when replacing parts. You can get used stock 305 parts for almost nothing, and sometimes for free.
There is another advantage when you try forced induction. It is easier to build boost pressure and increase density with a 305 than the 350.
I also think the 305 is more thermally efficient than the 350 due to less surface area the coolant has around the bores.
