1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Ugh, sorry I have been slack on updates lately, but after getting the car back to the bodyshop the deal we had worked out was for some reason no longer valid and he needed more money to finish it. After talking I loaded the car back up in the trailer and headed home with it. I think I have an idea on a person to spray the car and I'll put it together myself, but we shall see. I just need to take a short break from it, but I'll update again shortly!

Not to interrupt, but have you done the Aerocatch pins yet? I have those too and unsure how I want to do them. Some put them way out wide, I'd like to set mine up so they sit in the center-line of the headlights. Thanks.

Yes, do not fear! I have many updates. I will start them now. Sorry I have been slack. Just frustrated at the whole paint ordeal, but now a local guy has been finishing the car and it is in the process of being painted.
-I got the doors/fenders/bumpers on and partially lined up after changing out both sides door pins. The doors are SO much more solid than before with the old pins! The pins were kind of a pain, but not too bad. I couldn't imagine doing them with the doors ON the car!

A local painter then picked up the car and brought it home to paint. I will get it back with the hood(pins installed), fenders, doors, and bumpers loosely on. I will do the final assembly on the car. here are some exerts from his posting...
"I picked up chris's camaro this morning to finish up a few body issues and paint it. I got it home and unloaded and started to do work. Took off the front clip and passenger door after covering the interior and started fixing the spots on the body. The hood had a few wavy spots and had to finish smoothing where the old hood pins were. Had one ding on the drivers door and I found a rough spot on the passenger rear wheelwell. Gonna fix those issues and block the rest of the car to ensure it is straight then it is off to paint.
I finished fixing the hood and primed it today along with a bunch of the little pieces.

No problem. No as you can tell they are going to paint the hood and wait until final assembly to cut those in as changing the fenders and nose may change the way they need to be put on slightly. I will update once they are in!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Hey there! I'm coming from the slammed third gen thread, and yeah man..lol easily the best/coolest/most awesome third gen I've ever seen..if I had buttloads of cash coming out of my ears I would want to follow this build to the tee LOL.
It's really awesome that you decided to keep the TPI set-up on such a crazy build like this. In all honesty I do believe that wall you're running into at 4900rpm's is the TPI intake..you could try looking into the FIRST intake's to keep that TPI look but gain a bit more up top!
Anyways this build looks great, the attention to detail on this thing is just ridiculous..but that's the way to do it! I do have to admit though, I'm actually a fan of how the car looked with all the decals/vinyl but that's just my inner rice coming out hahaha. Could you by any chance post up some better pics of that side skirt panel I asked about in the other thread and some more pics of that rear diffuser? I've got access to a sheet metal shop, and I've gotten oodles of 3M carbon di-noc at my disposal hehe..
Thanks!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Hey man, thanks for the props! As for the all, I'm pretty sure a new coil fixed it. Pulled hard on the street well above 4900rpm. We will see once we get it back on the dyno!
I think once it's back together it will look stock, but wild. It will have the same stance, wheels, bodywork, etc. Just nicer paint and attention to every detail as it's going back together!
I will get you some good pictures of all the splitters and all, I just need some 3M carbon di-noc in exchange , but seriously I would like some if you can hook me up!
Here are many detailed pictures of the splitter, I know you didn't ask for these directly, but these are HUGE pictures and show exactly how they attach to the body and all.
http://jonsmithphoto.com/nuffnuffz28/irocsplitter/
As far as the side skirts they are simply carbon fiber pieces that are pop-riveted to the body(via the ground effects). I am about to post up a seperate post about those since I have polished and cleaned all the carbon fiber and also painted a lot of the trim pieces that are going back on satin black.
Hope that helps you!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Getting back in the groove of trying to finish the car. I bought some nice duplicolor satin trim paint and went to town getting the door handles, t-tops(they are plexiglass, were badly scratched, and has holes to attached them to the body when racing at the mile), brackets for the splitter, keylocks(missing one somehow ) and polishing up all of the carbon fiber pieces to go back on the car. Once the car gets here I want to be ready to put all this stuff on!
Carbon fiber diffuser ready to go! Scratches at the bottom of the picture are small cutouts for where it attache to the body and would rub if not cut to fit there)
Carbon fiber side skirts. as you can see they simply have holes to pop rivet them onto the body
Polished Iroc taillights
Satin black t-top/roof rail. The t-tops were surprising hard to get a uniform color. After talking to the guy painting my car he stated it is because the high humidity and thick coats I was laying down. Some parts were looking more gloss than others. He said to barely coat it and just make a few very light coats(almost just misting it). I did that and it turned out GREAT once dried. Also here is the polished third brakelight. It was VERY dull when we started!
This is the bracketry that holds on the front splitter(These pieces permanantly mount on the front of the car
T-top rail. This piece was pretty rusty! Some sand blasting, prep, and paint later it looks pretty good and the part that still shows some pitting will be covered by the weatherstripping.

Love it! very cool build, really looks great. TPI's aren't going to be dyno kings, but should be a hell of a street ride.

NufNuff, this car is absolutely gorgeous! I am loving what you are doing to it. It is sweet to see you stuck with the TPI, I hope you can get past your brick wall. That porting looks very impressive. This whole project is just down right ideal, everything is tastefully done with a whole lot of function. I wish I could tackle my project as you have done yours, I'm struggling with what I have Your project definitely motivates me and sparks some new interests and ideas. Thank you for sharing this much detail.

Just an updated picture of the best dyno so far while I wait to get wrenching again! As you can tell it was at 21psi. Now it's down to 16ish... I still hope to make 650ish on a dynojet with more RPM...

The tease I'm getting from this site from the builds being worked on is exciting. I've only been back for a month or so and I'm seeing all types of work get done. Glad to see TGO'ers don't back down. Keep it up.

WOW, what a cool thread and a over the top ride. I appreciate all the hard work and attention to detail. Not only is this car looking great but has all the mods to back it up! Great job and was hoping the last page would show it all together. Soon it will...

NufNuff great job with this car! It's coming along nicely! When you got the car it was already in great shape and now you're making it even better instead of just leaving it as it was. I respect that!

Sorry going back to those carbon side skirts..lol are they custom fabbed or can you buy those from somewhere?
#137
Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Custom. they are carbon fiber sheets that were cut to fit. They then had holes drilled in them so they could be pop riveted to the body. Yes, they will be going back on.

Beautiful work here. Always enjoy keeping an eye on your progress. Keep it up.
I am actually looking at some of those Edlebrock Performer Heads that you have....how do you like them? What valves/springs are you running?

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
I am no longer running them on my 355. I have AFRs so I can't comment. I have custom valve springs a local engine builder spec'd for me based on the cam and boost level.
The Edelbrocks are still on the old 305(just sitting as the head gaskets were blown). I may put new gaskets on it and run it in my yellow Iroc...

Looking good. I remember seeing that IROC a few times in Wilmington a few years ago before you bought it. It was pretty wild back then so I can't wait to see it when you finish it. Hopefully you'll bring it down to one of our Cars and Coffee meets.

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Well, at 2:30 am this morning I finished the body except for the front splitter and side cf add ons. Went to snap a few quick pictures and threw the belt(BROKE!) and the car also is hitting a wall at 4900 rpm on boost or not but paint is 95%(small things like decals, touch ups, emblems and front splitter to install). But, will be driving it some this week!
I WILL get it straight though!!! Ideas on belt? Imma check alignment and SC shaft play first.....
Hoping the 4900 RPM wall is timing related.... Its 15 everywhere right now.
Anyone, for everyone waiting....
