1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Well, as many know I bought the 1987 blur LSR style Iroc on here back in July. It wasn't an expected buy, but at the time I felt I was getting such a good deal that I sold off parts from my yellow 86 build and concentrated on this car. Some of the pictures are really bad as they are BB pictures in the dark, BUT I wanted to take you along with me on a ride through the car so far. It's come a long way in a short amount of time and I'm doing everything I can to keep up the pace even though we are buying a house next month. Plans are for it to be on the road by the end of next month.

Although this thread is mainly about the engine/computer, paint, etc it has TONS of great parts on it. The brakes and suspension are awesome. The cage and chute really ad to the look and function. It also has a full fire suppression system in case things get ugly... Well, enough of that here is it's history...

July 17th.... The ad was posted. Here is the description and picture from it. Love at first sight!

Dusty and I ended up there that night to look the car over. The car was in a small garage, but we looked it over pretty well and were blown away by the attention to detail on some of the things on this car! We struck a deal and the next day Adam P and I trailered down the BHP trailer and loaded it up. Here are a couple crappy BB shots of that night....

Loaded up in the trailer to it's new home...

It had a little coolant smell, but no big deal we figured... He stated he thought it had a slight issue on the passenger side head gasket. Darren threw together an impromptu photo shoot the next day and a local school.

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Well, on 9/20/10 the yellow Iroc left for it's new home on the OTHER side of the Colorado rocky's. It was bittersweet to say the least, but I knew it was time

First thing I started on was pulling all of the stickers off of the car. It was a little too stickercharged for my taste. I got almost all of them off and on the ver last one on the passenger side the "Grand Sport" stripe pulled off some paint on the passenger side. I was upset, but before the end of the week had something worked out with Robbie at Absolute Body to get it touched up along with a few spots here and there soon. With that being said I loaded it up on the trailer and brought it over to bananaman's house(Also my uncle) to tear into the motor and replace some blown head gaskets.

It matches my trailer well

After I got it there I first used an old 4th gen seat to make the Sparco's slide(were mounted solid) and then uninstalled the narrow band O2 sensor and got the wideband AEm wired in and loosely mounted. Moving up to the engine I had one thing on my mind and that was getting those heads off. it was meant to be a simple head gasket(or maybe throw on my AFRs if everything worked) and be done for now. Plans were to upgrade the computer system after the Spring...

Before I got started...

The power adder!!! Vortec YSi with a polycog setup. Have pulley's for up to 25 lbs of boost and with the cogged setup slipping should not be an issue...

Other side... Tial Blowwoff(surge protector), oil catch can, and you can also see the beautiful Moroso valvecovers. Closer to the throttle body you will see the aquamist extra injector setup that after seeing the damage below i decided to ditch along with teh stock computer(INCLUDING STOCK CHIP!) for a MS II setup that is using some of the stock wiring, but a complete Megasquirt ECM and 4 bar map...

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Well, got the heads off and was immediately dissapointed for a few reasons

-4.15 head gaskets on a 3.95 bore 305
-both head gaskets blow very badly
-slight cylinder wall damage due to coolant sitting in it for extended periods
-#1 piston had damage to it from a severe lean/detonation condition

Here are some pictures stripping down the block, and pulling the ECM wiring to bring it to a friend in Charlotte to convert it over to megasquirt for me...

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Well, after seeing all the things that needed attention in the motor we decided to go ahead and yank it and install a fresh 355 we had waiting to go in the turbo car. A quick cam change and buttoning it up and it would be ready. Pictures on specs on the motor to follow. Now back to the removal of the old 305!

Here bananaman(my uncle), his son, and Mark(roadkill) get the motor out of the car while I stand around and take pictures

ITS FREE!!!

After it was all the way out we could really take an invetory of the parts on the motor and also check all of the damage

Closeup of the piston with a bad mark on it. Also not the etching in the cylinder wall, most likely from coolant sitting in there for extended periods.

Drained the oil(What was left of it)

Really like the external timing belt, but I already have a nice two-piece billet one on the 355. Also note the rattler balancer!

The 305 had some VERY nice splayed for bolt mains on it...

Nice H-pipe setup on the car with "fake cats'", flowmasters and the only bolts you have to remove to get it off are the collecter bolts. The rest is hung from the car with high quality rubber exhaust mounts. Very tight system!

Not shown are the dual aftermarket fans, huge Be Cool radiator, and Spearco intercooler that can only be removed if the front bumper is also removed!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

After the engine was out we figured a few other things should be taken care of as well...

New plans included

-355 with AFR heads
-Stock ECM gone and replaced with a MS II system with 4 bar map
-aquamist FIC system thrown in the trash(well for sale)
-Vortech super FMU and 36 lb injectors gone and replaced with 8 80 lb ones run by the MS setup
-Boost retard box removed
-Aeromotive Fuel pressure regulator added with CF gauge
-Update the fuel lines and fix a few parts on the custom fuel rails to allow for much more flow

(Updates and pictures on those other things soon!)

Motor specs are a simply SBC build that should handle boost(25 lbs at sometimes!)
-355
-splayed 4 bolt mains
-6" Carillo rods
-AFR 195 cc heads
-CP pistons
-8.5/1 compression
-Custom comp cam
-all TPI parts are gasket matched, but retaining the stock looking TPI(SLP runners, 58mm TB, siamesed runners)

Dusty adjusting the rocker arms while I again stand and take pictures...

Cleaned, painted, and polished WP waiting to go on...

I also removed the harness as stated above so that I could get it to Sam in Charlotte so he could convert it all for me... After that was out along with the motor I got the wheels swapped just because they are worth about $8k before bringing it over to Robbie at Absolute body

19's

chrome ZR1's on and ready to go in for paint!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Next we loaded up the car and brought it over to Robbie(friend that owns a body shop). He was going to touch up a few spots and just get it presentable for me!

Well, after looking at it a couple minutes we noticed there were some primer still showing in some spots and some parts where the paint was so thin you could see primer under it. Luckily the car was in the right place to get it all repaired and taken care of. We decided to do a full strip down of the car and repaint! We are also getting rid of the four slider hood pins and replacing them with 2 aerocatch hood latches like below. We are going to paint them black to add some contrast to teh hood!

After they started to tear into the car we found out it has 3 coats of paint(including the factory paint job), 5 on the nose, rust under the T-top, ill-fitting hood, bad driver's side door hinges, and bondo on a few places.

It's current state

Check out the fire suppression runing over the passenger side tower! It has two nozzles under the hood!

There was a real rat's nest under the rear bumper!

5 coats on the bumper and some cracks

The spoiler has never been off! It had a large ridge on it when it was removed. 3 coats on it!

Done for tonight!

I'll update as we progress!

Pics are fine for me. Absolutely stunning car there. Very excited to see your progress.

One question and I might be a total idiot but I didn't see it in the above posts. What color are you panting it? That paint looked fine. So you must be doing a color swap.

Thanks man!

It was a good 5-7 footer. Closer to that you would see a lot of imperfections and problems! Factoy Iroc blue for me for sure! It's my favorite color.

I am looking for opinions on the color of the hood...

Posted opinion on other thread about the hood. I have adobe cs4 if you want me to play around with it.

Factory blue..is that darker or lighter?

What paints, primers, and gloss are you planning on using?

It's the exact same color... I believe he uses Naseer products. The car will be taken down to bare metal before any painting happens!

Yes, just for giggles I would like to see it with a black spot where the louvers would be and just black rectangles at the rear of the louvers if you don't mind...

Sadly, if you counted the price of the car, complete motor, paint, and misc. updates I'll have about 20,000.

It has some very nice parts on it. Motor was just pretty much toast when I got it and the paint was not a very good base to do touch-up on as it would of been hard to match the not-so-good paint.

I should of known better, seeing as I have had 10+ thirdgens.

In all honesty, the Supercharger head unit and wheels are worth more than I paid for the car. I also had another Iroc(see above) that I sold along with parts from another build so the actual car was paid for from selling those parts...

Got a few things in the mail today. Guess I will be seeing Robbie this weekend...

New door pin for the drivers door from topdownsolutions(TDS) so that the door won't have over an inch of slop in it anymore...

Also, the Aerocatch hood pins came in. We are going to paint them gloss black to match the headlight buckets and grille...

The front bumper had some "work" done to it along with some cracks and 5 layers of paint, so a new GM front bumper is on it's way to the bodyshop at this time...

The car should look BETTER than new once it's done this time!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Got some good progress done so far this weekend and am hoping to get some more done tomorrow!

Bought a new GM front bumper as stated above because the one that was on the car had 5 coats of paint on it along with cracks, stress, and not much support around the nose emblem.

Also stopped by Absolute body and saw the car stripped down to METAL! It is strange seeing your car like that. Found damage on the back hatch(very small), right rear quarter, rear bumper, normal door dings, and a couple dents in the roof... ALL are being repaired 100% correctly and I am getting anxious to see how it will look all done. ALso I took the rear splitter off for minor repair and Robbie is going to tie in the painting on that with the rest of the car.

Rear splitter removed:

Car stripped down to the METAL! Really strange looking to me, but I know the car is in good hands. No half-*** job this time!

Previous work that is going to be pulled and repaired without the use of so much bondo.

Both doors

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

NEW GM bumper!

Today I went over to BHP and worked in the motor some as well. Put on the valve covers(unfortunately the AFR head rails were too thick for the Moroso valve covers I had, so we ran a 1/4" cork/metal reinforced gasket that allowed us to use that to seal the cover on the heads better), oil filter adapter, oil filter, checked oil pressure with a drill, double checked the rocker arms, spark plugs, etc. We are cranking the engine on the stand with a carb for break-in and rocker arm adjustments before taking the intake/carb off and putting the TPI on before we install it in the car.

Well, all was going well until we tried to put the bolts in the intake and forgot I have center bolt heads, but no newer style carbed intakes. I will try to find one tomorrow so that we can crank it soon!

Updated pics of the engine!

Ignore the hads down the pants in the background

Ignore the "spacers" on the one side. A few are longer because of the spark plug wire holders that I am using...

55 psi on the drill!

If you have any questions just ask! I'll update again soon...

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Pretty big update today! Last night we got all the "dyno" parts on it(WP, intake, distributor, etc) and put it on the stand to crank. It cranked up immediately and got it running quite well in less than 1 minute. The video following is the actual FIRST startup!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAmqz...layer_embedded

Cooling down after it's first heat cycle

Sorry for the BB pics. Will get some better pics and video today!

Going to crank it up again today, reset the valves and pull it down to put on the TPI and Vortech!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Few small updates that I wanted to share. Wanted to make sure everyone is well informed!

Using new gaskets, but the same old style intake assured us everything is working well in the new 357... Here it is right before we pulled it off of the stand.

Now that the motor is done, I'm getting everything else ready to bolt back to it.

The car had a metal air dam under the car that housed two holes for feeding the air ducts to the front Baer brakes. I wanted to keep them, but gain some ground clearance, so we straightened it, cut the bottom as high as we could and angled the sides slightly. We gained well obver an inch, so we will see how that works out for us. I think I will be street driving the car much more than the previous owner did, so an inch is a big deal.

Just a couple shots of the alternator and catch can that I polished up and are now ready to go back on. Still have to figure out about routing another line to the can or maybe bring two to one, then to the can. Just want to make sure there are no restrictions and added pressure on the rings. They will being seeing enough of that as it is.

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Above you can see part of the Supercharger piping and the welds on it. After getting a hold of the piping and seeing a few changes were to be made(removing the MAF, relocating the IAT, etc) we decided to clean up the welds, weld a square over the MAF opening on the bottom side, and re-powdercoat everything.

Bananaman taking a turn on the welding duties on a plate we made to cover the old MAF housing hole

Piping after a little welding touch-up, grinding, and sandblasting. They are not yet done, but getting there. The devil is in the details! After they are finished being "cleaned up" I am planning on coating them bright silver.

Looking at the fuel rails, the previous owner had a good design with the stock rails that he did by removing the FPR from it and relocating it to the firewall in the form of an FMU. We improved on that by upping line size, removing all of the restrictive 90* bends he had and installed straight ones that we drilled out as large as possible. We also removed the cold start injector and welded up that hole in the rear of the rail. Lastly removing the "test port" that was previous used for a gauge mounted under the hood rounded out the changes on the rail. Disregard the lines on it now(besides the ones directly connected to the rail) as we have it hooked up as a "closed" system so we can test it for leaks once the intake is back from porting through the schrader valve.

I should be getting my intake back within the next couple days. Once that's in i want to get it on the motor, test for leaks, and get the TPI back on it and ready to go in! as most know the TPI system is not known for flowing well, or supporting a High RPM engine. With over 20 lbs of boost being thrown into this one every little bit helps!

Here is a teaser of the intake base...

Got the intake base finished 100%. Its opened up a LOT and gasket matched on the intake and head side(1205 felpros on the head side). should really help when it has over 20 lbs of boost being shoved through it. Just got to clean it up and throw on some paint! These are just a few I snapped with my BB, but will get some better ones soon.

Got the car back from Robbie at Absolute(for now). Body is in primer and the engine compartment is painted. I am installing the engine this way to hopefully avoid any paint damage. Enough talk. On to the pictures.

Beautiful car, nice setup just a quick questions since you spent all this time and money on the engine why not get a single plane with elbow or a miniram intake?
Keep up the great work

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

I guess the same reason I still have the T5 in it. It was originally a TPI/5 speed. I also think the TPI is the best looking intake out there and love the torque it provides. Lastly, I just plain like it. I know from a performance stand-point and this HUGE Supercharger I'm leaving a good bit on the table by not bolting on a better flowing intake, but deep insude something just wouldn't let me do it,

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Well, I noticed I have a lot of pictures and not much explaining of the process. I just wanted to go trough a couple things and please ask ANY questions you may have.

The custom fuel rails proved to be a major PITA and after pressure testing them we had to fix two leaks. By taking a drill press and a LARGE drill bit we were able to cut out a section of the rail and allowed us to thread the fitting in deeper and stop the leak. Also, the siemen injectors we are using are slightly too short, so John at injectorsplus is going to help me get them sorted and tight in there. I surely don't want them blowing out under boost which I'm afraid they would with over 20 psi.

Everything else is going on relatively well. The 1205 Felpros squeezed out towards the head when I started to bolt down the middle two bolts, but some flatheads and strategic tightening fixed it. I am hopefully getting the injectors back off tomorrow(maybe I can do it by just removing the plenum and not the whole intake),which requires removing the valve covers to get the runners off.

ALso tomorrow, I plan on getting the radiator, starter, belt, headers/exhaust all back on. That will leave the injectors, wiring, and piping(SC parts).

I will update soon!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Got some more things on last night.

Alternator, crank pulley, starter, headers, exhaust, slave cylinder, wideband, and the adapter for the superchargers oil(which is located directly above the oil filter are all done. it went rather smoothly last night except for having to try and fab a setup that would allow us to space out the supercharger oil feed tube easily without being too long and hitting the body. The next day I work on it, I'm going to try and knock out the Supercharger install, fuel pressure regulator, lines, coolant, and get it ready to crank. I am planning on leaving the SC belt off for now as I'm getting the piping painted to match the car and it's not quite finished yet.

On to some pictures!

Completed intake base, fuel rails and custom lines. Two leaks had to be fixed before this was installed. bananaman came through though and it tested fine at over 50psi!

Midway point of painting the brake lines/booster/etc. Here you can see the brake lines are done, but the booster and steering are not. it is all coated at this time.

Motor ready to go in!

Here nstigatr steady's it while I step away to grab a picture. Yes, we did get it in this way(tranny installed already)

She is resting in the mounts now! I'm tightening the bellhousing bolts in this picture from up top. At this point we had room for DAYS!

Looking more like a car!

Headers and full exhaust done...

fans, radiator, alternator, etc all on.

Ready for some boost! Ignore the nuts under the valve cover bolts. they are simply there while the wires aren't on(waiting on a rotor button) and will be spaced out using wire loom at that time...

Thanks man! It's actually not that bad! If you check the old for sale ad you will see that a lot of the parts were already on the car.(SC, built 10 bolt, built T5, centerforce clutch, etc etc) Also, the motor was 95% ready when I bought this car. It was going in my other Iroc as a turbo blowtrough carb setup.

Can't WAIT to hear it run!

With regards to Megasquirt:
Are you planing to use the direct coil option for the ignition?
Are you using the relay board?
How far away are you from installing your ECU?
Do you have plans for your FIdle and/or spare inputs?

I have already ran my TPI 350 using megasquirt on a test stand, and it was quite a treat to see (and feel the rumble of) everything runnung as it ought to.
