No Power after head work
So I just got my heads machined and all replaced and all new gaskets yet I took it out for the first drive and it moves the car normally but it has no power especially top end, it just kind of spins the engine and there is a weird kind of sucking noise or something, hard to tell. Can someone please help me or guide me in the right direction please? THANKS!

Re: No Power after head work
I changed the timing, advanced it a bit, helped a lot but still doesn't have the power it had. Recommenced timing maybe? Or any other ideas?

Re: No Power after head work
Not enough info. Could be a vacuum leak. What kind of machine work? If not tuned after a good quality port job it could be going lean? No power and dangerous.

Re: No Power after head work
what kind of head work? Can you pinpoint where that noise is coming from?
Lots of stuff has to be removed if you remove tjhe heads - and lots of stuff has to go back on correctly. So lets start with the obvious: check fuel pressure, check compression, check spark at each plug, are plugs tight? air intake clear?

Re: No Power after head work
Ok well I adjusted the timing and it was back to normal but than the power dropped again and it shock badly in 5th gear. I think the noise was a sucking through the hole in the throttle body, only happened when the timing was off.
Heads where completely cleaned and reassembled. As well as the valve seats and the contact surface was machined.

Re: No Power after head work
Soooo many things it could be..
Sounds like it could be a vac leak to me also. Did you get the little vac line hooked back up under the t-body?
Spray some carb cleaner around all your gaskets a little bit at a time and see if the motor responds (speeds up) if so, you have a leak.
Did you follow the factory service manual for the teardown and assembly?

Re: No Power after head work
Yeah, I know but I don't know what else to do.
I got the one under the t-body yes, the one that attaches to the other part with another tube going to the rear of the intake area.
And around the head gaskets?
And I follow hanes, they don't talk about specifics unfortunately....
I'm curious if this is all a timing issue, I tried getting it to the 0 mark, kind of hard since it jumps all over the place, but that didn't work so I put it to +8 and it was good for a while and than it started the shaking in 5th...

Re: No Power after head work
Normally I say do a search and you shall find answers but I'm feeling frothy tonight. Enjoy.
Its a single wire connector sticking out of the pass side wire loom right behind the strut tower. There is a method to the madness so you'll have to search how to do it properly or look in your book for the info, it should be there.
see the set timing connector in this diagram?

Re: No Power after head work
Basically you're trying to set the base timing while the computer is adding in its advance, throwing off the reading you see, and thus setting the timing at. Disconnect the single wire EST and set the timing to whatever the base is in the prom. If a stock chip, it'll be 6 degrees. Then plug the EST wire back in, disconnect the battery to reset the code it'll throw, and start it up to relearn.

Re: No Power after head work
Alright thanks, I did all that and put the base to advanced 4 and that wasn't right so I have 8 now but it still doesn't seem to have the power it once had....
