Where to find EGR Solenoid Valve

Help! I need a new EGR Vacuum Solenoid valve for our 1986 5.0 TPI IROC. Mine is leaking a bit in the closed position.

I cannot find one anywhere! I'll take any suggestion - has this part been discontinued and there is some other one that will work?

I've been digging and it looks like the 1985-1990 corvette solenoid is exactly the same except for the mounting bracket. Does anyone know if these will work - the valve itself looks identical?

I'm not certain, but I "think" those will work but the electrical connector is different.

Re: Where to find EGR Solenoid Valve

I've spent a bit of time figuring these solenoids out. I don't know exactly how yours specifically is supposed to function but I do know they are either normally open(sends vacuum thru with no power going to it) or normally closed(closed vacuum and the egr side venting). My speed density TPI is normally open, I replaced it with a Caddy solenoid. I think early MAF were the opposite, maybe. If yours is normally closed (unlike mine) then I believe a fbody TBI solenoid or an LT1 solenoid will work.

There is a link to another thread in there that shows a bunch of info too.

Thanks for the info. After checking my 1986 GM Camaro shop manual, I found that the EGR Solenoid on my 5.0 TPI F body is NORMALLY OPEN PWM Solenoid.

I found the following article on Corvette EGR troubleshooting...
http://tech.corvettecentral.com/2012...egr-diagnosis/
...and it states that the 85-89 TPI also uses a NORMALLY OPEN solenoid. From this I and looking at the actual part, I'm 99.99% sure it will work, will have to figure out the mounting bracket but no big deal.

I also found that the 1985 Camaro TBI uses a NORMALLY CLOSED Solenoid so that would not work.

After all this, I went to GM Parts direct and entered the part number for my Camaro and it let me order the part. Seems to good to be true, I'm expecting that the Camaro Solenoid will never show up. Stay tuned....

Re: Where to find EGR Solenoid Valve

Two things. Paulo is correct the connector is often different. Though the corvette one looks to be the weather pack design like your 86 should be. I made a pigtail to change mine. And two, there is no 1985 TBI camaro. They were still carb'd. Fbody TBI started in 88.

Re: Where to find EGR Solenoid Valve

My 92 SD works correctly with the 94 Caddilac solenoid. I never dug up the answer for the MAF setups.

Re: Where to find EGR Solenoid Valve

I just installed the Vette one this week and it works fine. I had to put the vette solenoid in the old Camaro bracket to mount it. Otherwise it is the same part in a different frame.

Thanks, I have an 88 GTA 5.7 TPI, original owner and I may have a problem with mine.
Still in the testing phase

Neal301. Which port on that solenoid did you connect to the EGR valve?

The port that vents goes to the egr. The port that blocks off when the other is venting goes to the TB. You may have to energize the solenoid to get it to vent.

Re: Where to find EGR Solenoid Valve

Lots of comments here about the LT1 solenoid however I was able to locate the following correct model year solenoids at Auto Parts Warehouse.

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sh.../firebird.html

Question I have is will the 89-92 8cyl 5.0 solenoid - AC Delco p#AC214339 work for my 1989 TPI 5.7? Does anyone know if 1.They have the same connector and 2. If there is any reason the 5.0 solenoid will not work on the 5.7?

Thanks!

I believe that is the TBI solenoid. I have tested it on my 92 and it doesn't work. The Lt1 works like it and does not work either. Use the 94 Cadillac or corvette solenoid mentioned earlier.
