Smog pump pulley removal?
I have an '87 IROC-Z that I'm converting from the v-belt to the serpentine setup. I have a complete '90 TPI motor I'm using for my donor. I already have the water pump and A/C condenser off. I want to take the smog pump off the '90 motor before I remove the bracket. Is there a trick to getting the smog pump pulley off to get access to the bolt behind it?

Re: Smog pump pulley removal?
Just recently took my smog pump off. Took me all of 10 minutes to do it. I believe it was 3 torx bolts and a few 10 mm bolts as well.

Re: Smog pump pulley removal?
Are you confusing the power steering pump on the driver's side? That pulley is pressed on, and they make a tool to remove and install. The 2-half shell seems more popular, but I have a one piece tool. You can likely rent/borrow a puller/installer from your local parts shop.
Other things to keep:
1) The pump to valve pipe is different, keep the one from the donor. Might as well keep the diverter valve and muffler (round can on the hose) from the donor.
2) The stock air injection "spider" on the exhaust manifold is different.
2a) cheap and easy... Take and swap the whole exhaust manifold.
2b) swap spiders from the donor to your manifold will likely booger up the donor or yours on removal.
2c) get headers where the check valve is already further rearward, to be serpentine compatible.
3) If you have/are swapping to TPI, the hardlines behind the alternator (serpentine) or AC compressor (V belts) are also different.

Re: Smog pump pulley removal?
It's been a while but here's an update:
I was removing the smog pump from a '90 TPI 305 motor that I removed from a Formula. I was trying to get it off to get the brackets off to convert my '87 IROC to a serpentine setup. Since I'm not going to reuse the pump I drilled a hole in the pulley and stuck a screwdriver through the hole. I wedged the screwdriver against a ridge on the pump, and then removed the bolts to the pulley. More than one way to skin a cat I guess...

Re: Smog pump pulley removal?
That sounds like the bolts were threadlocked or corroded tight, and you needed a way to keep the pulley/pump from spinning while removing the bolts.
Glad you got it off.

Re: Smog pump pulley removal?
If they are that tight you can use a screwdriver and wedge it between 2 of the 10mm bolt heads and use a socket or wrench to loosen the 3rd. Then rotate and loosen the next and then the last. Then remove them all.
