minimum amount of electronics?
Hey guys, getting around to wiring up my engine and components, and after throwing the harness into the engine bay, im noticing how many connectors there are and how few places I have to connect them too..
So my engine is a pre roller 350, hsr intake, smog pump/egr is deleted obviously.
So I want to get this thing running, how much of this wiring harness is not needed? Or better question would be is how much is needed? I have the maf connector located, throttle body connectors, ait sensor, knock sensor (eeven though on my harness im not finding the connector).
Im finding a bunch of connectors that I would have no idea what they go to, if I have the basics hooked up (intake, dizzy, cpu, alternator, starter, coolant temp) will this thing run? Or are there peramiters in the cpu keeping it from running without certain things hooked up? I just want to get her running and start the fine tuning later after I actually get it started up.
How many sensors are actually in these tpi cars? And why am I noticing that I have so few of them lol!
Hopefully you guys can help me out with my confusion.. thanks

Re: minimum amount of electronics?
Can you post a pic, with locations highlighted of the 'extra' connectors? Just running from memory here...... (and it ain't the best....) You MUST have:
MAF
IAC
TPS
CTS
Dist
Coil
IAT (not actually required, but, a good idea.)
Injectors...... (of course.) don't forget the cold-start injector.
Other stuff:
EGR (will set a code)
AIR (will not set a code)

Re: minimum amount of electronics?
Awesome thanks for the reply! I do infact have all of those, but being an hsr i have no cold start injector i will take pictures and figure out how to post them.
Before on my v6 harness, i had these two fuses on the passenger side that plugged into a end attached to the frame, but i see no connectors in my v8 harness for those fuses. The harness is from an 88, also the plug that connects to the EVAC canister is on the completely other side.. Also have no plug for the little "sensor" on the power steering line.
I have the power connector from the harness to the dizzy, but not the tach, have no idea how i could have lost that lol

Re: minimum amount of electronics?
I think the other connection is just a two wire harness that goes from the dist, to the coil? It's been a while since I have worked on one.
Power steering sensor isn't critical.
You may need to do a prom change, to make up for the lack of the ninth injector. (I think it went away anyway in 89?? or thereabouts.....) Else you may have cold start issues. (but then, does it even get cold in California? May or may not be an issue. taste and see.)
No clue what the two fused connectors would be all about. I don't recall them on my 88 either.....

Re: minimum amount of electronics?
Yes i do have the connection from harness to coil, but the other one im not finding, for the tach i can imagine. maybe ill research into making my own tach wiring. doesnt have to go through the computer does it??
also the computer i have is from an 88, the guy said he was running without the ninth injector (tpi runners also had no provisions)
ok so anyways, in the pictures, first pic is the fuse "covers" (i guess), in the old harness i had these connectors with fuses in them, and they plugged into these frame mounted covers on pass side.
PIC 2: drivers side, both are orange wires, i need to find a new one as theres not enough room to splice into the remainder. dont know what it goes to.
PIC 3: Pass side, looks like an injector connector, but way down by my battery? this is confusing to me.
PIC 4: these connectors, not a clue what they go to either. pass side, in the cluster with the other injector looking connector in pic 3.
PIC 5: this looks like an alternator connector, its opposite side of my alternator though, and my alternator has this kind of connector on it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Chevy-Corvette-Camaro-Firebird-Alternator-Repair-Harness-Plug-Connector-/161523989262?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1988%7CModel%3ACamaro&hash=item259b947b0e&vxp=mtr
Is there a way to splice that connector into my current harness and still maintain a proper functioning alternator?
PIC 6: tucked in behind the dizzy, short wire off the main harness. black and pink wire.
so there ya have it. all the connectors that i am lost on. in regards to the power steering line connector, is it important in terms of power steering functioning?
thanks for the help, i really appreciate, will definitely speed up the process with some advice from the thirdgen fam

Re: minimum amount of electronics?
Pic #1 Fuse holders no longer in use.
Pic #3 Looks like connector for cold start injector or cold start switch.
Pic #4 Guessing these are for A.I.R. diverter valve.
Pic #6 Definitely EGR solenoid.
There is no power steering switch on these.
You probably have a Firebird harness instead of Camaro. Battery, and I believe EVAP canister are on opposite sides.

Re: minimum amount of electronics?
Thanks! So basically I can almost just delete all this stuff than, because I wont be using any of it with my Hsr.
Ive also got 2 more questions...
#1: how can I wire up my stock tach by avoiding fishing through my harness? (Cant find the wires anywhere!!)
#2: I have the 3 wire alternator, but a 2 wire harness connector, how can I make this work??
