Car has around 90,000 miles on it. Engine was 100% original down to a fully functional smog pump when I got it.

They weren't.

Either you have a 350 in the car, or a 305 with really low compression.

If the engine is all original, it's possible that the 5-speed was swapped in. What's the 8th digit of the VIN?

I doubt the 5 speed was swapped in. From what I'm told this car was the personal car of the owner of a GM dealer from new. The engine looks so untouched it's my guess that he had it swapped in from new. I'm going to try to track the guy down. I can get the vin # later

Is the VIN on the block? My heads were swapped under warranty due to worn valve guides and the block due to a blown head gasket before I had 50k miles on my car, however to pop the hood it looks bone stock.
