L98 GTA Injectors issues
Hello guys
I am from Romania, i have an '89 GTA and i encountered some problems with the injectors.
At some point the engine began to start really hard and to work in 7 cylinders ..6 cylinders, sometime 8 cylinders..always changing and it also started to give some strange smoke (white/blue/black), all together.
The ignition system it's okay, it's good, just the sparks, even if they were new, for some reason are getting dirty.
I checked the injectors by removing the plug while the engine was working and found out that on the cyl #1 it was not working. So, i removed all the injectors and put them on a flow test.
The results:
#1 was working perfectly
#2 was working at 2bar, but above ..like 3bars was stopping working.
#4 was working but, ..bearly working. It was not shooting fuel at all, just leaking some fuel.
After a few minutes i tested again and #1 also started to work bad, giving a very small flow and very low pressure. #5 was going good but having a little bit smaller flow then the others.
So, the impedance:
#2 - 7.8ohm
#4 - 15ohm
All the others: 17.2ohm.
In this case, i took #1 & #5 and cleaned them with the ultrasonic machine because the impedance was good and it worked, the gave normal flow after cleaning.
I removed the whole petrol from the tank (40 liters) and it was having dark brown color, even if when i putted it inside was looking good.
The thing is that the car stand for a few months without being started.
Now it's overheating also but the cooling system it's alright. I believe that it's happening because the engine is not working fine.
I also tried to start the engine with petrol from another tank with another pump and it was working quite fine, not bad.
Do you guys have any idea if the tank it's made of metal or plastic inside ? Is it possible that the engine it's overheating because of this even if the cooling system it's working ?
I have ROCHESTER injectors Part #: 17086545. I want to change them all to avoid any problems. I found remanufactured ones at a good price (23$ each). Can you advise me with some alternative injectors at similar price (more or less) ?
It's a problem having this kind of car over here ... almost nobody knows anything about them. I am working in the middle east and i left the car to a friend of mine mechanic together with a manual which he studied but a little help from you would be way better.
Thank you for your time

Replace those injectors. All of them. It's a good Idea to drop the fuel tank and clean it out if it had old gas in it for a long time.
Bad injectors shouldn't make it overheat. The thermostat is the first likely cause among numerous others.
What tank are you referring to? the fuel tank? They are metal in these cars.
My suggestion for injectors is to try a sponsor on these boards, Southbay. You would need 22# injectors. Use these http://www.southbayfuelinjectors.com...rvette-c4-l98/
Obtaining parts is probably going to be a pain over there, but at least the knowledge is world wide.

Re: L98 GTA Injectors issues
Hello,
Thanks for the help
I am talking about the fuel tank. I think it's rusted inside. After i'll fix it i'll leave the keys to someone to start it from time to time...
I already received the new fuel filter, i will clean also the fuel pump and maybe i will directly change the pipes from the tank to the engine.
It will take long to remove the tank ? As i know i have to remove the complete assembly which is holding the rear wheels like suspension, arms, wheels etc or i am wrong ?
Anyhow, this is the car: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/euro...i-romania.html ... it is now with me because Chilekesh moved to Russia.
Thanksss
PS: Yeah, it's quite hard to bring the parts over here, hehehe

Re: L98 GTA Injectors issues
To pull the fuel tank you need to drop the exhaust and rear axle. The back of the car needs to be up very high to get the tank out. It's not all that difficult but it is time consuming and irritating to do so many steps just to get to the tank. Search...there are lots of threads that can help you in the process.

I might add that once the tank is out and cleaned, it might be a good idea to put in a new pump and be done with that. A GM or Walbro pump

Re: L98 GTA Injectors issues
or scrap the damn thing and get a plastic tank from a 99-02 f-body, replace the sender and make new fuel lines with AN fittings and SS braided hose. If the lines are questionable than that is what i would do. It is also kinda fun to build it.
As far as injectors go with Southbay - get Bosch III injectors- you will never look back.

Being that you are in Romania- I think getting the tank would be the hardest part, but maybe you can find a wrecked car to part out or something
