TPI 305 MSD?????

I have a basically stock 305 and I'm installing a 100shot nitrous kit. My question is: is it nessacary to install a MSD box or is the stock TPI ignition pretty good? I was looking at the MSD Street Fire. And if i do will this throw a CEL on the TPI systerm? Basically i want a rev limiter, so should I just get a flashed Eprom or for the extera $70 am i bettrt getting the MSD box???

Re: TPI 305 MSD?????

If your stock type ignition system is strong, and not worn out, the MSD is not needed.

No, an MSD will not light the CEL. The computer will not even know it's there.

You should get a nitrous controller that has a rev limiter/RPM window switch just for the nitrous system. It won't activate too low, and it will cut off before your engine/spark rev limiter... That is, cut the nitrous flow (at say 5800) before the rev limiter starts cutting out spark (at 6000). You have a high risk of damaging your exhaust from flowing un-lit nitrous through the engine then getting a back fire in the exhaust.

Thanks, never herd about exhaust backfire being an issue before. Iv always been told its OK to use the vehicles rev limiter as long as it cuts power to the ignition and not the injectors. Think I'll go with The street fire box and lll have to look into a window switch. Thank you again for verifying that the MSD box will not set a CEL.

Your GM ignition with the GM module and coil is way superior to the MSD imported cheap china junk streetfire thing. Believe it or make sure your AAA is paid up, you'll be needing it.

Re: TPI 305 MSD?????

What MSD currently offers(overseas crap) is not an upgrade over the stock application, especially for your purpose.

I recently replaced the internals of a MSD HEI we used for a conversion on a 401 AMC with stock GM components because the MSD unit **** the bed after 5,000 miles.

Re: TPI 305 MSD?????

the traditional expensive MSD stuff is still like it was. It's the streetfire grade stuff that is problematic. The price tells the story.
