Big time leak from tank

So I have a STOCK '89 IROC with the 305 TPI. Since the weather started getting warm I'm smelling gas fumes especially after filling the tank. Now the fuel is leaking after a fill up out of the pressure release thingy that comes out of the top of the tank. This last time it lost about a pint.

This has never happened before and I feel it's a dangerous situation. Anyone have any ideas how to proceed?

Re: Big time leak from tank

My 91 RS had a factory recall on the filler tube, and such recalls never expire. I had it replaced yesterday at the dealer's, free. Here's one for your ride on the fuel filter. Hope this helps:

Re: Big time leak from tank

OK but
I know where the fuel is leaking. Out the top and down to the pressure release valve. It then goes into the "frame" of the car and out in front of the driver side rear wheel.

The question is why is the fuel going out that tube where it never has before. There are no cracks, splits or damage.

Re: Big time leak from tank

I had a similar problem. What We found is that the seal for the fuel level sending unit had got pulled into the tank during an evap test the car ran and was leaking there only when I had a full tank.

Re: Big time leak from tank

Well gas is coming out of the release valve whenever the car is turned off. I have about 3/4 of a tank right now but it's still leaking out the top. It's not like there is a tube inside the tank that goes to the vent.

How or why is the gas jumping up and getting out this way?

Re: Big time leak from tank

It appears to be better. I don't know if it's "fixed" yet but the little rubber hose in the tank that connects the fuel pump had tiny holes in it which appeared to inflate the gas tank at the top when the car was running. Turn the car off and the top of the tank would sink down at least half an inch letting the gas level slosh over the vent and tank seal. Especially at gas stations after topping off in hot weather.

I replaced the hose with super high strength injection hose and ordered a new top seal and lock ring. ONLY $5 bucks at the Auto Shackers!!

The top of the tank is definitely stretched out though and moves up and down an alarming amount like a worn out drum. I just don't believe that is normal
Keeping my fingers crossed.
