cam for Hsr/afr head question

I have a Hsr with a set of 195cc afr heads. I am looking at a XFi280 cam for this set up. I have a 10 in. 3600 stall for this set up also. The question I have is the heads springs are 140 on the set 356 open. . Will this cam work with what I have?

I just went through this when I bought AFR 195's for my LT1 which use the same springs. AFR recommends a maximum RPM of 6300-6500 with them. I ended up going for upgraded springs.

Even though you are running SBC, and I'm running LT1, they are mechanically very similar since the LT1 is basically a SBC.

My engine easily makes power past 6500. My redline right now is artificially low at 6500rpm, but the engine was built to spin past 7k, and the shift-point is around 6800.

Also, if you click on the links in my signature for the GTA you can hear what it'll sound alot like. The SLP 2otL is actually a really quiet exhaust (I really enjoy that bit), and lets the car "hide" from most people. But you can still hear about how the car will sound with the cam/head combo. I'm running LT's with no cats.

I have an idle/rev video + a video in 2nd gear from about 3000-5000.

The car shakes with the cam, it hates to be below 2000rpm when cruising. But you can get some work out of it around 1700rpm still. Peak torque is about 4500-5000rpm, and from there it just wants to go, go, go.

Your stall will help alot. I'm running an M28 T56 which has somewhat wider spaced gears, but the very short 3:36:1 1st gear lets me run a 3.23 axle without issue.

Parking lots are a PITA. Cam surge up the wazoo on the current tune. I just picked up a AEM WB02 that i can wire in to the PCM for logging as well.

Re: cam for Hsr/afr head question

I checked it out it sounds nice. It has a nice lope to it. I hope mine sounds similar. That lopes almost as good as my solid roller motor I had in my 89 firebird. It was a 565 lift on 1.5 rocker but I had 1.6's on it but I don't know the end lift but it hit fairly hard.

Those springs may get you by to 6500 but the upgrade 8019 spring is the better choice for that cam when turning 6500+. It will go that high on a 350-355" motor. Its a good cam.

Re: cam for Hsr/afr head question

I should mention that the LE cam I have is almost identical in duration to the 280 cam you have. Mine is 231/239 @ .050" on a 110LSA. Slightly more duration and a tighter LSA than the XFI you want.

I pretty much had to go with the upgraded springs, otherwise I was leaving power and reliability on the table where the cam wants to spin in a 350. I also plan on doing HPDE with the car, which means 20-25 minute sessions @ 5000rpm+ being near peak power often. So it was just safer to go with the better springs.
