Tpi problems loss ofpower

I have a 85 iroc Lb9 I can drive one day runs fine then the check engine light comes on I go to pass a car push the pedal to the floor I loose engine power it drops about 500 rpm and losses speed I don't have a code reader that is the next thing I am getting as it is an ODB1 plug and my ODB2 don't fit i let up on the gas pedal and it runs smooth again I turn the car off let it sit for 5 to 10 min start the car it runs fine 10 to 15 min down the road it starts again I would like to keep the tpi but if I can't figure it out will go to a carb need help and how do u read the codes with out a code reader since for me to get on is over an hr a way
