L98 Replacement

hi guys im new to owning a third gen firebird i have been searching for a replacement engine for my car which is a 1987 formula 350 the engine that is inside is badly warped and no shop will rebuild it

does anyone know of good crate engine for around 2-3k that will bolt right in?

i found a site that sells 350s for 1500 but after reading some threads here some warn that i would instead get a truck motor with different cam and heads...

Re: L98 Replacement

What about a local engine remanufacturer? There's got to be lots of good ones in LA.

You can get a brand new ZZ3 crate motor with a three year warranty from GM for $3000.It's basically a higher performance L98.

I think you should be fine. They have more success than they do failures, imo. You just don't hear people post up success stories as often as bad ones.

Let us know how it goes.

I was able to find a rebuild l98 from a guy that crashed his camaro it is out of a 92 complete. I am having problems now because i think the 9th cold start injector plug is missing and the fuel rail seems different so it takes to much cranking to start. Also the fuel pressure drops way to fast from 44psi to 20 in less the a minute.
I already changed the fuel filter and it still doing the same thing.
Im thinking of replacing the
Fuel regulator and diagramph
Fuel injectors
And possibly the fuel pump
Can anyone guide me or name the tools i need to replace the
Fuel regulator and diagramph.
I have the 92 cpu but it has vats so im using the 87 im thinking that can be the problem to the starting

Re: L98 Replacement

I've got a running L98 out of a 88 Camaro I would take $200 for. If anyone around North Florida is interested. We went back with a create L31 motor in our build so we don't have any use for the old L98.

Re: L98 Replacement

Not right now I'm only asking $200 I'm not sure I want the hassle. If it doesn't sell locally I would consider it.

He can just setup freight pickup. You won't have to do anything but put it on a palette and strap it down.

Re: L98 Replacement

I hope you didn't order a long block from them. The cam and heads they come with are junk. I did the same years ago, gave them my VIN too. The heads and cams that come in these replacement engines do NOT match L98's and it confuses the hell out of the ECM. The cams are often the baby cams found in TBI 350 and later B-body LT1s. 191/202 duration and a tight LSA.

I'd rip your own heads off, have them redone, and either run your old cam if its in good condition, or select a new very mild cam that matches the L98 specs closely.

I went there, the car will not run right with that small of a cam, and combined with the slight differences in heads it won't pass emissions.

Just get a short-block and have it rebuilt, or buy a short-block that has the right piston reliefs (L98s are pretty much flat tops with valve reliefs. I think about -5cc max) Most GM 350's used the same relief piston.

I went ahead and installed a 350 (replacement motor) using the vin on a gta i had sitting down 3 days ago it makes sense now
I installed the rebuilt on the formula 350
The GTA runs good but has no power it doesnt feel like it use to run i step wot but feels as if the power is not their im starting to think it does have a different cam and heads

I will be able to tell how much of a difference when i get the cold start injection or fuel problem solved on the formula

Cold start will have zero effect on performance. Fuel starvation could have a big effect.

But I'm willing to bet you have a Baby-cam in there now thats is less duration than the ECM is programmed for. And it likely has 193 Swirl Port heads which are junk.
