White/blue smoke at start up- what could be the cause??

I've got a 1988 IROC convertible with the 305 TPI, whenever I start the car up hot or cold I get a large amount of white/blue smoke...what is/are the possible cause(s) of this. Thanks for any help!

+ another 1 for valve seals! Mine does same thing, just havent got around to replacing. Sounds like Abubaca is dead on when he says they all do it.

I read a book where the author said GM must've designed them to leak at 100k miles, because you can almost guarantee it's gonna happen! Kidding of course, but you get the point!

Its those crappy umbrella seals they used..

I've noticed it seems to happen sooner on 305's than 350's though.

Same here at 15k, only on warm start up for me. I guess sitting so much of it's life caused them to dry up and seep.

Arnold, on a warm start-up, you MAY have injectors leaking...hot soaks...fuel leaking into cylinders. I guess you could check your pressure at the rail before you start it up warm and see if it has pressure at the rail. Just some idears.
But yeah, with your seals sitting so long, who knows.

Re: White/blue smoke at start up- what could be the cause??

Mine was smoking on warm start ups and the first "take off" from a stoplight if it idled there for an extended time.

Surprisingly valve seals and a fresh oil change(not sure when the last time it was done) cured nearly all of my issues!

I used the Fel-Pro intake ones on all valves and it worked out great!

Bob, I think you mentioned that possibility to me when we spoke a while back. I'm looking to remedy this problem this Summer so I will have them checked.

Thanks bud!

Arnold, yeah, I think I remember that...sometimes sett'n in!

NufNuff, did you use the PITA little "O" rings with them too, or just the the intake ones alone?
