1988 GTA 5.7 Stalls when slowing down/coming to a stop.

Hi All,

I recently acquired a 1988 GTA with the TPI 5.7. The car is completely stock. Long story short I have been fighting this car with stalling issues, surging, rough idle ect. over the past few weeks. I have replaced everything from the fuel pump, to fuel filter and injectors, ECM, MAF, IAC, Spark Plugs, cap/rotor while chasing down the issues. I have replaced the CAT My car had multiple issues but im at the point now where it starts easily and idles relatively decently and revs up smoothly. It drives and had plenty of power and runs smoothly. The last issue im fighting is that once the car is warmed up to operating temperature (around 190 degrees) it will stall when braking and or coasting to stops. Its gets progressively worse and eventually hits the point that it stalls and wont start until cools. I have no check engine codes, my TPS is set at .54 volts.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 1988 GTA 5.7 Stalls when slowing down/coming to a stop.

you might be getting excessive fuel pressure build up if the evap / tank over-pressure / inlet vent(s) aren't working or evap line plugged, etc...

this typically happens on hot days and you can tell by either hearing the fuel boiling or also if you take the cap off their is a high amount of pressure built up.

i have had this happen on several 3rd gens with the type of symptom you describe and put a true tank vent in to prevent it, you can look at the thread in this forum for details on it

you could have other issues as well, but you seem to have already insured you have a good pump and injectors, etc... you could put a fuel pressure gauge on your schrader valve and watch it as you drive to see if the fuel pressure is dropping during this event (make sure you have the gauge secured well if you try this and screwed to the valve tight)
