Distributor gear wear, what's normal? (Pics inside)

Distributor gear wear, what's normal? (Pics inside)
I pulled the distributor from my car and noticed wear on the dizzy gear. It has 55k miles on it so I know there will be wear but does this seem like acceptable wear to the point where I can just reinstall the distributor and call it a day?

I also have a fairly new MSD billet distributor with the polymer gear on it sitting around not doing anything. I've had some bad luck with MSD stuff but using this dizzy is an option I have over the oem one.
I'm not building a performance engine so the stock dizzy should be fine but this MSD one does has a brand new polymer gear on it.
Just not sure what the big hype is with these Pro Billet dizzys. Part number 8366

A lot better than I have pulled out of some cars.
I have about 2k miles and 4yrs on a comp poly gear, looked new when I last pulled it out, guess I'll see how long it"ll last.

From my experience if you can feel any ridges worn into the gear then it should be replaced. The distributor gears for roller cams are surface nitrided for wear resistance, but the base metal is quite ductile so the gear carries load well and does not damage the ductile iron gear on the cam. If you wear thru the surface treatment the gear will wear a lot faster and possibly damage the cam.
Also so yourself a favor if you ever use the MSD and throw away the aftermarket dist. gear that came with it. Some companies take the "Melonite" process to mean hardened tool steel. If you use one of those gears it will totally trash the cam after a few hundred miles, as I found out. Always buy distributor gears from AC Delco/GM unless its some exotic aftermarket cam.

The gear on the MSD dizzy is a polymer gear that has about 10 miles on it. I tossed the stock gear in the trash when I bought the dizzy. Either way, Im reusing the oem dizzy.
