tpi oil pressure problem
hey guys, need some help with an 89 5.7 t.p.i motor that was swapped into a monte ss. the motor is blowing the seal on the oil filter when i start the engine. as much as 2 quarts shoots out in just a few seconds. i replaced the filter adapter that was cracked in half thinking this was the problem but i still have the same issue. i tried 3 different brands of filters all with the same results.the motor was sitting for a long time before i got it running again, it runs well except for the oil leak issue. the motor is stock and original with low mileage.the motor does not have an oil cooler on the block. if the cause is a stuck pressure relief valve inside the oil pump causing a spike in pressure would i have to pull the motor and change the pump. i read stories about clogged oil passages being cleaned out by running a mix of 50w with a quart of atf. thanks for any advise.

Re: tpi oil pressure problem
You can try the atf trick. Maybe run it for 20 minutes and drain. Are you sure you don't have a doubled up gasket? If none of that works it sounds like you're going to have to drop the pan and replace that pump. Not sure if that is doable in a G body without pulling the motor. It can be done on the thirdgens, but you have to get the motor up 3-4 inches which usually requires unbolting the motor, trans crossmember, dizzy, starter, exhaust, blah blah blah etc...

Re: tpi oil pressure problem
Try rotating the oil filter adapter 180 degrees, that took care of the problem for me after installing a new short block. The oil ports in the block and adapter are most likely misaligned creating a restriction to oil flow and lot of back pressure. If you a have spare stock block compare the two adapter orientations. Be sure and careful needless to say do not blow up your engine trouble shooting the problem. I hope this helps you.

Re: tpi oil pressure problem
Stupid question, but you're running an oil filter adapter with a bypass valve, yes?

I'd bet the new adapter is cracked as well.
