Manual Transmission Mount

Greetings! I have a 1989 Camaro RS 2.8L MPFI 5-Speed manual tranny. The transmission mount is broken and the replacement is ridiculously overpriced at $300. Wondered if anyone has had to do this. I wouldn't mind replacing the crossmember in leu of using a cheaper tranny mount. Any ideas or suggestions?

Here's a pic of the mount that is on there now.

jegs shows ES pn 1108 to be a universal fit application, or gm didn't make any changes over the years. cost is 20 dollars.

i would get that mount, and then just find a thirdgen crossmember like this.

that should work i dont think it matters if u have a v6 engine and tranny or not.

thats a pic of a standard tranny mount crossmember.

Re: Manual Transmission Mount

I'm looking to replace the same thing. Welded in a auto trans mount... but it keeps breaking.... Has anyone replaced this mount on the V6?

Back from the dead. You welded in the cross member or the mount? Which keeps breaking (the mount I assume)? V6 or V8 makes no difference. The following link may provide some insight:

BTW, if you welded in the cross member, may I ask why?

Re: Manual Transmission Mount

It's the rubber mount that keeps breaking. I welded the metal part of the vulcanized mount to a bracket I made to adapt it to the fluid mount style cross-member. I just found a cross-member on eBay that I hope will resolve this problem.

Re: Manual Transmission Mount

I got the cross-member that has the secondary rubber donuts hoping that will dampen the vibes some.

It will, but you might check for the availability of the 'donut's themselves--like all rubber they deteriorate. The secondary cross member will accept the standard OE mount. I dumped mine along ago for the one-piece. I don't recall there being any more vibrations with it than with the secondary.

BTW, welding may well have caused the rubber to fail.

Re: Manual Transmission Mount

I found a used cross-member for a V8 on E-Bay and then purchased a new aftermarket mount from Summit. I had to elongate the slot where the mount attaches by a quarter of an inch with a rat-tail file but the rest bolted up nicely. It does vibrate more than the stock V6 version but not enough to bother me into shelling out $300. Total cost for my repair was about $40 with the used cross-member and a new mount.

I think the bolt on the poly is larger than OE, as I was forced to do the same on an after market cross member. Here's a comparison of standard mounts for those who might be interested:
