one thing I'm confused about is the input shaft. Is it true that the input shaft is a different length on the v6 transmission? If so, does using the s10 Clutch compensate for that? (maybe it's just different on the s10 transmissions)

I want to get this clutch because of the 10.5" size. Are you all saying I can get the pressure plate separately, or do I need to buy a complete v8 kit, and just give away the v8 clutch to a friend?

or this one is an option too. saving these so I can find them later

The input shaft on my V6 T5 was about an 1/8-1/4" too long. I just cut the end off with a cutoff disc in my angle grinder. I cut about the thickness of 2 discs off the nose of the input shaft. Then ground a chamfer on the end.

The clutch disc you use really has no bearing in the length if the input shaft.

You should be able to buy the pressure plate and flywheel separately.

Re: Will a T5 from a V6 bolt up to a V8?

Just wanted to comment and share my successful swap. Took about a day and a half. Used a 92 v6 t5, had to cut the input shaft as it was long. Used a clutch disc from a 82 s1500. Went smoothly for the most part. Running longtubes headers so had to completely go with a different set which was hooker 2210. They clear the slave cylinder just fine. I do have a question. The speedo on my auto was electric and so is this t5 but connectors ate different. The connector is there on the t5, can I just cut my old connection and tie into the one on the t5?

I would like to add something...input shafts interchange simply because input shaft gear is actualy 4th gear wich is 1 to 1 ratio...problem is u have to open the top cover to make shure u put it in correct ,u have to line the synchro needle bearing and ... also change the shim behind the bearing race

Even though 4th gear is 1:1, the gear on the input shaft affects the gear ratio of every other gear in the transmission. You must use an input shaft with the same gear tooth count as the one that is being replaced.

Yup: the gear the clutch gear mates to, called the countergear, has to be different too if the clutch gear is changed to one for a different ratio.

You can sure tell who hasn't ever worked on a T-5 and who has.

Re: Will a T5 from a V6 bolt up to a V8?

lets see so u claim t5 used different size/teeth count of 4th gear/input shaft ...I am not big trans specialist but sure know how the trans works ,no need to be sarcastic...we r all here tring to collect info about 3 gen Camaros...I would like to se pic of v6 and v8 4th gear side by side so I see where u coming from....as far as maching 2 gear wheels(counter shaft and 4th gear) yes they wear together probably there will be little difference ,but I don't see why not

Re: Will a T5 from a V6 bolt up to a V8?

Look at the diameter of the gears, as well as the tooth count.

A V8 clutch gear will overlap the countergear of a 6-cyl transmission by around ¼". Or conversely, a 6-cyl clutch gear's teeth will fail to mesh with a V8 countergear by about ¼".

Either way, they don't interchange.

BTW, I should add:

My props to you for being willing to man up and admit your mistake. It takes a bigger man (whether male or female, doesn't matter) to do that, than the kind of idiot that just starts calling people names or whatever, when they are shown to be wrong.

We need more people around here who will do what you did.

Re: Will a T5 from a V6 bolt up to a V8?

I was forced into doing this swap myself. I spent several years building the car, drove it to work one day, and blew up the 700r4 on the way home. Unable to afford a rebuild, unwilling to install a questionably used 700r4, and only a few weeks before an impending move, I found a V6 T5 and pounced.

My block being a '74 (only drilled for the 168 tooth setup) I had to use a Lakewood bellhousing to clear the flywheel and starter and a flywheel and clutch kit for an '85 Astro van (bigger disc than the factory V8 version but made for the 14 spline input shaft.)

With 3.42 gears, she runs out of gear ridiculously fast, but she is infinitely more fun and quick!

Re: Will a T5 from a V6 bolt up to a V8?

168-tooth flywheel. The block is a '74 and is only drilled for this starter location.

I had to grind the flange to clearance the headers. Needless to say, grinding on $400 made me sick.

This bell housing completely filled the transmission tunnel.

The T5 is up, and the hydraulic transmission mount will be replaced with a traditional rubber one.

Re: Will a T5 from a V6 bolt up to a V8?

It seems the key to making the T5 survive is running a lower rear end ratio ( pretty much anything is better than the 2.73).
