t5 dead, got a few questions.

Well the other day I'm driving home in 5th gear at 55mph and all of a sudden, POP, POP, grind. The tranny pops out of 5th locks up the back tires and starts grinding. I had no cell service and was aware of the fact so I pulled it back (hard) into 4th and it decided it would drive. So I drove it the rest of the way home (4 miles) in 4th with it grinding the whole way. When I get in the driveway (car running or off does the same thing) it goes in every gear except third. The clutch (brand new) disengages fine and the fork and TOB are still in place.

Question 1. Any ideas on what happened, what am I looking at?

Question 2. Whats the difference between my t5 and newer model v6 t5's. Will a V6 t5 bolt up to my bell housing? Is the clutch the same or did they switch to pull style like the LT1 t56?

Just playing out my options because I have a 700-r4 sitting around and if this thing is gonna cost me a lot of $ then I'll just do an auto swap. Oh yeah, The tranny only grinds when it's moving. If I push in on the clutch it stops grinding until I let out on the clutch again. Guess that eliminates the flywheel grinding on anything. Pretty sure this is inside the tranny. Thanks in advance sorry for the long post.

your problem is the slider..... a rebuild kit is about 170 plus shipping....... or you could put the 700 in and send the t-5 out to someone to rebuild........DO NOT PUT THE V6 TRANNY IN ... it will live a very short life..good luck

Thanks for the help. I'm probably gonna put the 700R in it and start rebuilding the t5. This will be my first tranny rebuild so it should be fun. At least that way I'll be able to drive the car while I'm fixing the tranny. I'll just leave all the pedals in there, drain the fluid and remove the line and slave cylinder. That way it can all switch back easily when it's done. Thanks again, time to search for threads on rebuilding T5's

The 4th gen V6 T5s are WC. They use the same internals as a 3rd gen V8 WC T5. The input shaft is different, and the case is different where it mounts to the bellhousing. I'm working on getting adapter plates made to allow the use of readily available 4th gen V6 WC T5s for use behind V8s. Changing out the input is no big deal, and this would also allow me to sell them upgraded with superalloy gears or G-Force gears. Core V8 WC T5s are very scarce right now. I've got about three guys on a waiting list for cores. That being said, if you've got a core V8 WC T5 for a 3rd gen PM me.

The LT1 T56 style hydraulics are totally different than the 3rd gen. The clutch operates the other direction in an LT1.

Sounds like your T5 is a little messed up. The rebuild kits are $170, but thats' bearings, small parts (dogs, springs, etc.), seal, and bushing. You're going to have to examine everything and replace the damaged parts as required. You could have a damaged sliding sleeve, or damaged engagement teeth on the gears. If it pops out of gear that's usually the engagement teeth on the offending gear. If you don't want to get into it PM me and we can talk about having it rebuilt in my shop, or if you just need advice.
