hydraulic clutch line?

hey guys i have a question. i recently got my hydraulic line between my clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder get burnt by the exhaust, so now i need to replace the line. the manual and dealer says they r all one piece but i looked at em and figured i could still just replaced the line. does anyone kno wat kind of line it is and maybe where i can find it? thanx a lot

TTT , this is a great question. I have looked also, and noticed there a pins that hold the line onto each of the actuators. Should be no reason a brake shop or someone could not build up one. The original plastic is crappy. The braided steel used on T-56 setup is better. I too will watch this post. shawn

I may be of some help. Mcleod makes some adapter fittings that work great with a small mod done to them first. There is a small lip that needs to be cut down to the correct size in order for it to properly fit inside the the Master/slave units. The fitting fits both
so you only need 2. I have a Pic of the fittings and how it fits inside of the master. All you need is the braided line to go from one to the other. I think they have that also. You would have to order this via phone because they dont list it in their catalog. Its not very expensive also I hope this helps

How do you install the fittings into the origional part??? And what is the "little mod" you mentioned to get it to all work?

The little mod is to remove the little Lip/step on the end of the fitting. (the shiny part on the end of the fitting that goes ino the master/slave units.) then it just snaps in place just like the factory piece. Its then held in place with a roll pin that you can remove with a small punch and install with a pair of pliers. There is a small o-ring inside that should be replaced also. easy to do once you take the factory fitting out, you will understand what I'm saying. When you call Mcleod, ask for Les(shop supervisor) . tell him what your doing he is the one who dialed my system in and knows what is needed. Good Luck

I found the part number for the McLeod Industries adapter fitting: 139026

They are $44 apiece.

*UPDATE*

Russell Performance (Edelbrock) makes the same fitting but to -3 instead of -4 like the McLeod fitting. It sells under PN 640281 and is 2 in a pack for $20!!! The tech I talked to at Russell said that -3 is sufficiently large for hydraulic clutch applications.

What was going to cost over $100 now is costing me $30 for the fittings and the line.

Have you thought about getting the line repaired? It is basicaly the same thing as most newer fuel lines and I think I have seen repair kits for those plastic fuel ines. I had a guy come in and had the same problem. The only way to get it through GM is all one piece.

Nobody sells just he plastic line. I would not wan to get the line repaired due to the extremely high pressures clutch and brake lines see (upwards of 1000 psi for brake lines).


I bought the Russel fittings along with a 18" -3 AN braided line. It worked great! Relatively easy install...drive the pins out, pull the old fittings out, push the new fittings in, drive the pins back in, hook-up and bleed! Takes maybe 1hr total if everything goes smoothly. I ended up stripping the bleed screw in the plastic slave cylinder. Thankfully I was able to get a replacement from advance auto parts the next day and it was aluminum and only $35!

5.0slayer, I did it on a t5. It could probably also be done to a t56, but I am not sure. The part number for the fittings is in one of the posts above...

Russell Performance (Edelbrock) PN 640281

That is a pair of the fittings that you would need.

I have replaced line on my 87 sport coupe. Rock Auto sells for 39.00 I think. Comes with new roll pins and O-rings.

Found this thread and hope I get an answer to my question. To rhit_rs or anyone else that knows did you have to perform the "mod" to the Russell fittings to get them to work or did they work right out of the box?

i burnt mine 20 years ago and replaced esction with 2 pressure fittings and brake line,worked for over 20 years ,just make sure you have no leaks,its a pain to do ,due to the location and space restrictions due to headers.

The Russell fittings require no modification at all. I've used them.

I realize this post is pretty old, but just thought I'd point out, for future reference to anyone wanting to upgrade the line, if you manage to get the ALUMINUM 3rd gen slave, the 93-97, 4th gen braided steel line hooks right up to the 3rd gen aluminum slave and original clutch master cylinder. If you go that route, there's no need to hunt for any hard to find adapter fittings!

I bought the Russel fittings along with a 18" -3 AN braided line. It worked great! Sorry to drag this up again. I have an 84 2.5l with a sag 4 speed i just did the slave and clutch master cylinders on. I replaced my line with a temp one and clamped it down but id like to upgrade to the russel fitting and -3AN braided line. Will this solution work for my year as well and do i need to mod the fitting?

Yes, the adapter fittings should fit 84-02.
If the roll-pin fits, you don't need to mod the fitting.

Is your Sag. mounted straight up? I can't remember what they did those years for the 2.5.

Thank you.

Yes, no spacers or adapters but they did put a heavy bar behind the trans using the extra mounting space to compensate for the weight. I haven't been under any other model camaro so i couldn't tell you what else is different.

I dont have any bellhousing pictures however here is a picture of a remanufacted engine thats the same. Its also the same as the 3.0l mercruiser and 350 i believe. 60° right? (Still educating myself. First car i could really work on. My engineering studies have helped but i still have gaps.)

Hey Sunbound, yeah it's good that there's a place that actually sells the original plastic line, but like you said, that is pretty spendy for it! One of the easiest mods you can do is replace the plastic line with the steel, braided line from a 93-97 f-body. They're not too hard to come by in the junkyards, and the braided line is FAR superior to our original plastic one!
