Using Mechanical Speedo with 4l60E and Lt1
I have searched and searched, but cannot find a specific answer to my situation. I have a 1989 Camaro Iroc. I am getting a 1995 Impala SS LT1 and 4l60e. What do I need to get to make my current speedometer work and reado correctly. Please be as specific as possible and include a link if possible. Thanks for your time.

Am I correct in assuming your speedo is cable driven still? You could always swap the output shaft with the 700's output shaft and speedo drive. If your doing that, you may as well rebuild the trans though. With all the work involved in the conversion, your better off just using a later electronic speedo.

Car: 86 Regal Limited
Engine: 95 cop lt1
Transmission: t56
Axle/Gears: 8.5" gn/3.73 gears
you can't just use a mechanical drive tailshaft since the computer requires vss signal from the trans. check out jaguars that run(V8 conversion manuals, parts for V8 S10, Datzun Z, Jaguar, Chevy TPI & TBI, Colorado, Astro Van V8, Volvo 200 & 700) and look in the lt1 stuff, they have what you need.

Now if memory serves right.
U can use the speedo adapter from a 9C1 police caprice(say that 5 times fast)
The calibrated speedos were cable driven I believe and also had the sensor for the trans.
Might want to look into that.
Would be far cheaper than going thru anyone that does "conversions"
later

If the 9C1 thing doesn't pan out(and it would be cool if it did, that sounds like a handy gizmo to have)there is also a kit on the market aimed at streetrodders that takes the electronic VSS signal and uses it to drive a little motor and spin the speedo cable. It's made so you can retain the origional guages in your Hot rod with an electronic trans. It also costs more than a factory electronic speedo.
