t-5 wiring

I am in the process of converting my 86 IROC to a T-5 from a 700R4 and was wondering about the wiring harness - It has two thicker gauge wires (purple and yellow) which i assume go to the neutral safety switch on the clutch petal - do you just splice it into that switch?? The auto harness also has 4 other thinner wires in it - what are they and where do i route them? Also, the auto has a 4 prong plug that goes to the outside of the case (with three wires leading to it) and the t-5 only has a 2 prong connector - what does the extra wire go to and how do you route it?? Any info will be greatly appreciated - Thank you - Erik - Silver/dk red 86 IROC-Z

The purple and yellow wires on the automatic harness are for the park/neutral starter safety switch, you can wire them to a clutch switch, but if you have a remote hatch release, you might not be able to use it without depressing the clutch.

The 4 prong plug on the automatic is for the torque converter clutch, you won't be using it with the manual. I think the 2 wires on the manual are for the reverse lights, someone else might be able to give you a more definitive answer.

Ape's right, the 2-prong plug on the side of the trans is for back-up lights, it takes a blue and a green wire in the factory T-5 harness... not sure about the 700 harness, I'd think it would be the same though.

Yes, reverse light wires at the shifter switch are dark blue and light green on the automatics too.

Aperion: You forgot to cut the tan/white wire that runs from the hatch release switch and re-route it to the parking brake. Then it will work properly with the car either turned off or parking brake engaged. Check the wiring diagram for a manual equipped car and you will see it. Good luck, Lon.

Hey Lon,

I'm doing the same conversion on my car. Did you experience any driving problems with the TCC harness detached? Also, on the Neutral Safety switch, there is a purple and green wire; do I splice the purple wire from the auto harness to the purple wire on the neutral safety switch, and the yellow wire to the green - does the orientation matter? For the bach-up light switch, does it matter which way it is wired up? Thanks for your help.

lonsal: I'm sure there's a way to do it. My car was originally an automatic converted to a 5 speed and I'm just remembering how it behaved before I converted it back to an automatic.
