If you're replacing the ring and pinion gears themselves, it will be 7.5. The ring and pinion will swap between 7.5 and 7 5/8 and pretty much all the aftermarket stuff is 7.5. If you're looking to replace parts inside the carrier itself, there's a slight difference and they won't interchange. In otherwords, you can't buy a mini spool, locker etc. for a 7.5 and put it in a 7 5/8.

Your '88 will have the 7.6 rear end. Gears for the 7.5 and 7.6 (7 5/8) will interchange. It makes no difference. All you need to worry about is the ratio and the series of differential that you have. If you have a 2 series then you need a gear that will fit the 2 series. If you have a 3 series then you need a gear that will fit the 3 series. 3.08 to 2.41 fit the 2 series. 3.23 to 4.10 fit the 3 series. There are thick 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10 gears that fit the 2 series, but these are special made gears for that purpose. Don't worry about axle splines either. The axles have nothing to do with ring & pinion gears. If you are going to swap the differential then you will need to get one for the axle splines that you have. Your '88 will have 26 spline axles.

you can use the mini spool for a 7.5 in your rearend you just have to use thrust washers to compensate for the .625. thats what i did and mine works fine.

gears were upgraded to 7 5/8 for '85 model year,28
spline axles in 1990-viewed side by side 28 spline
axles are quite a bit stouter than 26 spline.

Re: 7 5/8 the same as 7.5 or 7.625
hey folks,
sorry to resurrect a thread that's been dead for almost a year now, but i got a similar question here and i don't want to start a new thread because i think this one fits it pretty good.
when using a 7.625 carrier, can you use any 7.5 aftermarket gears with it or do you need to do the thrust washer (what is this?) or some other kind of mod?
thanks in advance!

7.5 and 7.6 gears fit the same differentials. The only thing that matters is if it a 2 series or 3 series. You must have the right series differential for the gears that you have.

Re: 7 5/8 the same as 7.5 or 7.625
The case and differential gears were changed a little. The case is a little wider inside. The mini spool fits loose in the 7.6 case, so thrust washers were used as shims to make it tighter.

Okay as i'm still confused, i'll just go ahead and ask for my specific situation then, so that this thread can finally rest in peace:
I got a 4th gen 3 series posi carrier, my stock '89 axles and 7.5 GM 4.10 gears going into my '89 rearend - is this gonna fit?
In case my '89 are 26 spline i'd upgrade to (prolly aftermarket) 28 splines.

Re: 7 5/8 the same as 7.5 or 7.625
reviving a dead thread again. I had a question thomash205 when you used those thrush washers did you have more then enough room to push in the axle shafts to remove the c clips? where did you get the thrush washers? part numbers? I (unfortunately) already had my 7 5/8 rear end built and re installed and am looking for the easiest way to fix it get a spool in it I was originally told that the 7.5 spool would work and it didn't blew up in there luckly my gears made it out okay. anyways I wanted more info on the thrust washers or I was wondering if I could just have the spools middle blocks (that the cross pin goes through) made 5/8 of an inch wider. but if the thrush washers will work I can get that done tomorrow please lemme know
