T56 behind a 496 BBC?
I have a t56 in my sbc car currently. I am building a mark vi 496 BBC. The engine is a 1 pc rms, and its internally balanced like my current sbc. From what i understand the flywheel and bellhousing should work fine. My question is what will i have to do to the trans to make it hold up to well over 500 ft lbs. What clutch do you suggest, internal parts ect. I plan to eventually use a 4l80e but want to try the 6 speed first. Any help is appriciated. Thanks.

The T56 is conservatively rated to 450lb-ft, so your 500 isn't beyond a stock unit. (If you lighten the car, even better..)
The common upgrades to the T56 in order are:
- Upgrade to Carbon fiber blocker rings
- steel 3/4 shift fork
- bronze shift fork pads (all 4 forks)
- billet steel synchro keys (3/4-definitely, 1/2-recommended, 5/6-optional, Rev-rarely)
- Upgrade 2nd gear with larger engagement teeth
- Upgrade to viper output shaft
The last two to take the T56 from ~700lb-ft to about 900lb-ft..
McLeod makes twin-disk clutches that will hold that much power.

Re: T56 behind a 496 BBC?
Does the Mercruiser have a T56 on it now? The LT1 T56 uses a different flywheel than most other transmissions, so even if the flywheel will fit, it won't work with a LT1 T56 unless it's designed for it..

Nope, it won't work. Leave the boat parts with the boats. You need a custom flywheel from McLeod or Centerforce to match the imbalance of your 454.
