TH350 kick down / passing gear adjustment? [SOLVED]

Ok I had a Th350 built by a good shop.

3.08 1st, 5 clutch, 2200 stall, firm shift kit

I love everything about it over the stock TH350 except it does not kick down into passing gear as easy. All standard stock stuff, so cable operation is all right acording to stock setup.

Sure I could slam it down into 1st every time but its why its called passing gear

Now it not like the passing gear was removed and I must do all the shifting.
It just doesn't kick in or activate as easy as stock did.

Is there an adjustment on the inside?

Or just the pitfalls of a built trans?

Re: TH350 kick down / passing gear adjustment?

The detent cable can be adjusted. Up near the carb where the cable passes through the bracket is a pop up lock for the cable. Use a screwdriver and pop up the lock. You can then push the cable sleeve back towards the transmission. Now move the throttle to WOT. The cable sleeve will click as it's being pulled. You can then let go of the throttle and push the cable lock back down.

That's the adjustment.

That doesn't mean it's working inside the transmission. The linkage that the cable is attached to could be disconnected or the cable itself could be disconnected.

It's also possible that the shift kit removes the detent kickdown option.

If they were a good shop, they should fix the problem.

Didn't know there was an adjustment, had that sucker on n off dozen of time, guess I need to look closer ehy?

And it is a good shop but they are in AZ Im in OH, he got my business as he is good and bends over backwards for folks. Which got him into trouble money wise, helping for free to much and not charging enough. Don't wanna bug him if its a small thing I can do.

I think even the older backyard mechanics versions of Chiltons and Haynes manuals will show how to adjust the detent cable providing they have any information at all on the TH350. It won't be in a third gen version since that tranny was never available in a third gen.

Re: TH350 kick down / passing gear adjustment?

Thanks

That helps jogg the old brain bucket, I got a 1980 chassis service manual around here somewhere. Them things are ubar detailed and should have that info.

And I can assume don't play with it to come in sooner?

I still know nothin but when I knew even less played with one on a Duster.
Had the kick down come in at half throttle. Was fun, till the trans cracked/busted in half and took the rear end with it comin around a corner hot.

Re: TH350 kick down / passing gear adjustment? [SOLVED]

Ahhhh all is better now.

Didn't seem like it was off by much but that adjustment fixed it, so it jumps into passing gear like usual.

Which until it doesn't work, you have no idea how much it helps or how annoying it is without one.
