Found this posting on craigslist, and think I know the answer but Figured I'd ask.

8.5 COMPLETE REAR DIFFERENTIAL OUT OF MY 77 CAMARO, NEW 373 GEARS, NEW POSI UNIT, MOSER ALUMINUM REAR GIRDLE. NEW PARKING BRAKE CABLES, WHEEL CYLINDERS, BRAKE SHOES AND BRAKE DRUMS.
How much fabrication would it take to fit a 10 bolt 8.5 rear out of a 77 Camaro into a thirdgen?

I know It's not a direct bolt-in like a 4th gen rear, but are we talking minor modification or major engineering?

Major engineering. Swapping over the spring, shock, LCA and panhard mounts over is easy. Trying to fabricate some way to attach the torque arm is difficult. By the time you're done, it can be a lot easier and cheaper to just buy an aftermarket direct bolt in diff.

This swap is a bit more involved however can be done if you can or know someone that can weld...
You can used vitually ANY rear end,12-bolt,9",8.8,8.5 etc....
I am using an 8.8 rear on my car(not installed yet) most 8.8s from explorers come with lockers 31-spline axles and either 3.55,3.73 or 4.10s.generally no more than 250.00 from salvage yard!You can always redrill axles and rotors to retain GM bolt pattern on the Ford...my total is 850.00 for mine
