What kind of transmission in 92 Camaro
I just bought a 92 Camaro RS with the 305 engine and 5 speed manual tranmission. I just put a new 350 in it with about 450-500hp, used the old transmission and I am sure it's going to blow. I need to know what kind of transmission is in my car so I can look into getting a new one that will fit the same as the old one so I don't have to do a ton of work to get a new one to fit. Also, does anyone know of a good drag racing transmission that would fit without doing a ton of work? I was thinking of a Powerglide.

Power glide is an automatic trans.. isn't it? If u have a t5 I would keep it or go t56 (6 speed) its a lot better on gas and tons of more fun to drive over the automatic

Yes the Powerglide is an automatic. I am setting up my Camaro for drag only and wanted to put in an automatic because I wanted to get a better jump off of the line. I was told that with the 450-500 hp I have with my motor that I was going to end up blowing my transmission but I don't know if the transmission shop I talked to was just trying to sell me a transmission. I haven't had a chance to take the car down the track yet. I'm still finishing up a few things, brakes, tires, etc. Maybe I will just wait and see how the trans holds up and then go from there. The T56 (6 speed) does sound like a lot of fun though.

Re: What kind of transmission in 92 Camaro
I've got a 454 in my camaro with about 520 ft lbs of torque. I have a wc t5 behind it. It has held up pretty well during its mild street use. I don't shift hard, I'm using a stock organic clutch with a 3000 lb pressure plate, 2.73 gears, open diff, and hard street tires. After I put the new cam in I drove it wide open hard (not power shifting) 3 times and did two burnouts. Now the tranny whines in 3rd and 4th gear and the rear end whines. So drag racing will almost certainly blow up a T5 fairly quick. If you are gonna drive this thing on the street any I would recommend a built TH-400. If you're gonna trailer it then a glide would be better.
Some folks have kept T5s alive behind big motors. But most who drag race them blow em up pretty regular.
