T5 to 700R4 swap
Am I crazy?
Is this swap far easier than vise versa? I assume I would need flexplate, trans, crossmember, and shifter, correct? Are there any wires or sensors to connect?

There are wires - you'd need the chip from an auto car and the wiring harness from the ECM to the tranny - the torque converter lockup function is controlled by the ECM.
BUT - you could install an aftermarket torque converter lockup that uses a vacuum switch and/or a manual switch to lock the TC - then you could avoid swapping chips and figuring out the wiring for the 700R4.

IF, I go through with the swap, I definitely would be interested in trading. It would work out great for both of us.
How the condition of your 700r?

Re: T5 to 700R4 swap
I have a 700r4 that I just pulled out of my car last night. Doing the T5 swap. Nothing is wrong with the trans. I have a few parts if you are interested. PM me if you still have any of your old stuff.

Re: T5 to 700R4 swap
I am interested in doing this swap too and was online searching for information. I have a 1989 305 TPI engine with a T5 transmission. 4rth gear can be tricky to shift into. You have to rev the engine up just right (and then 4rth gear will slip right in nicely). I read in a tech book (can't find book in all my stuff) that the earlier 700r4 trans doesn't use a computer and are desired for swapping without a computer, but I recently read on a forum posting that the earlier 700r4 trans were prone to breaking a lot (junk).
I'm interested in gettin a solid transmission that I can swap in with least hassle, and wanted to see if others knew why the earlier 700r4 was or wasn't good. Also, what years did they make the 700r4 and of those years, which are electric vs. non electric?
Is anyone interested in swapping? I'm in Fresno, CA.
Thanks
My car's engine was originally paired with a T5 transmission.

Re: T5 to 700R4 swap
Look at junk yard if needed the 4L6OE is the same transmission inside just with removable bellhousing and electronic sending unit for the speedometer.

Re: T5 to 700R4 swap
700r4 was used 1982-1993,non-electronic those years.Early 700s are 1982-'83,several upgrades including 30 spline input shaft ,were done for 1984 version-another group of upgrades came ~mid 1987.1994 up is electronic controlled 4l60 E version.Later, most upgraded, version of course most desirable, but I think the "junk"reputation of the earlier 700s(84 up at least) is way exaggerated-I have had very good service from the 8/84 mfg. 700 installed behind mild 350 in my car and I had done a few "bad"things to it with no complaints I swapped my '82 from t-10 stick to th 350 then to 700r4-swaps were easy, using mostly factory parts, but a separate cooler was needed since my stick radiator did not have cooler.

Re: T5 to 700R4 swap
I have to agree these were never meant to be put behind vehicles with over 250hp. When doing so people got mad that they didn't stand up to the 300+hp applications and got a bad rep. With a little bit of work these transmissions can handle a good amount of power. The main limiting factor is that tall first gear and requires a quick shift.
The ideal transmission is the 4L80E which in essence is the same as the th400 and 350 with the 4th gear overdrive. That allows for a little more gear and better street manners.
