borg warner 9bolt questions

i busted the 10bolt in my car

i picked up a 9bolt rear installed it then went to tighten the driveshalf down and one of the bolts snapped

a few questions
1 are the pinon yokes the same 9bolt and 10 bolt
2 why is it so hard to pull the pinon yoke on the 9bolt 10bolt one came right off
3 or is it a better idea to just drill and tap the yoke ?

Re: borg warner 9bolt questions

The yoke is not the same. The yoke is suppose to be a light press fit. They are not suppose to slip off. Do your best to remove the bolt without drilling and taping it. This usually just ruins the yoke. This must be done right or you will have a vibration or the drive shaft will constantly be causing you problems.

If the bolt is sticking out above the surface of the yoke then you can weld a washer to the bolt and then weld a nut to the washer and use a wrench to remove the bolt. The heat will help loosen the bolt. Use a 5/16-24 tap and some light oil to clean out the threads before putting bolts in.

If you try to drill the bolt you will be taking a big chance of ruining the yoke. These bolts work harden quickly and a drill bit will not cut them after that. It's very easy for the drill to run off center and get into the yoke. If this happens then the yoke is trash. If you don't have the tools to do this then take it to a machine shop and have them do it. The 9 bolt yokes are hard to find.

When you put the yoke back on you must be careful not to get the nut too tight. If you do then the pinion bearing preload will not be right and you will be replacing the pinion bearings soon. I have found that around 125 to 150 foot pounds of torque is about right. Be sure to use red Locktite on the nut when you put it back on.

Re: borg warner 9bolt questions

its broken off almost all the way in that bolt was only loose to allow the hold down to spin for drive shaft removal the bolt broke wear the treads start on it so basicly the entire threaded portion is stuck deep in the yoke mind you this rear had been out of car for years in a back yard thats why i was removeing the bolts 1st to make sure i could so even with pb blaster sitting on it from the night before this bolt was done lol guess im in for some fun
