Torsion bar came off at trans housing??

Ok guys and gals. I was on my way home from Wisconsin to Central Illinois when I heard a clunk under the car at 70 MPH. Pulled over and the black bar that ties the rear end to the tranny pulled out of the holder at the transmission. Luckly the bolt was still there. I limped it back to a tractor supply store and got some tools. Found out that the treads are striped where the bolt mounts. So I got some pipe clamps and wraped up the bar in it's home and off we went.
Now that I have it home, has anyone had this happen to them. What is the next size bigger bolt to use. Is there an easier fix? I was going to try to get a touch bigger bolt and tap it and see what happens, any help here would be great. Thanks Matt

Can you post a pic? Is the torque arm bushing worn out?

I just replaced mine with this http://www.ebay.com/itm/310897729737...84.m1439.l2649

It is a much snugger fit and i didnt even use a a bolt at the tranny.

Bigger bolt = BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD

Besides that, NOT a good idea AT ALL

Heli-Coil the hole, put the right size bolt back. It's 10mm, whatever the std thread is for that size (1.5mm I think but I could be wrong. .... well, ... I AM "wrong", every chance I get and then some, just ask my kids, but besides just that, possibly mistaken about this one particular detail, one glance at the available Heli-Coil kits will guide you down the straight and narrow)

Re: Torsion bar came off at trans housing??

I don't think my bushing is worn out. I still have rubber on each side of it. The bolt sandwiches the end of the torshion bar inbetween it and the bolt seals the deal. I'll try to post a picture, I still have to get the car up on jacks and get my rigging off and pull the bolt to see what size it is. There isn't much room between the tunnel and the side of the tranny. Going to be a treat to fix. Why, my I ask, is a touch bigger bolt a bad idea? I have to cut new treads anyway to do the coil, why not just hit a bigger bolt in that hole!!

Re: Torsion bar came off at trans housing??

So I pulled the torsion bar off the transmission, and pulled the bushing off the housing. The bolt has a 10.9 on the top of the head and the bushing is missing the top 1/4 that turns 90. Im going to take the bolt to fastenal tomorrow and see about a heli coil. I tried to attach a picture but it failed twice.

Re: Torsion bar came off at trans housing??

It's called a torque arm, so if you're trying to do searches and research, that might help you find more relevant information on it.

You could consider getting an aftermarket torque arm with an aftermarket crossmember + mount. That would be your worst case scenario at this point. Best case is helicoil, and throw it back in. But as I recall it's not super easy to get to. You may have to lower the tailshaft down pretty far.

Re: Torsion bar came off at trans housing??

Yes, torque arm....discovered that shortly after I posted. Thanks. Yeah. It looks like it's going to be a fight to get this back up and running. I looked at the ebay link that is above in this post and can't tell how it connects to the tranny. Gotta do some more looking. I'm going to try the coil and see how bad it is. I'll post as I move forward with the project. Thanks Matt
