Stock t5 Shifter too close to the ash tray
I picked up a 88 camaro with 305 and a T5.This was a v6 to v8 conversion. But it was a 5 speed with the v6.The guy had a 88 with a v8 and rusty body and a nice 88 with a v6 so he swapped everything. But here is the deal the shifter is to far forward to put the trim plate on.Here it is in first gear.
And here it is in 2nd
I am new to these cars can anyone tell me whats wrong?Could the shifter be backwards? Here looking down in the console.

Who the hell know with that beast. LOL
I am going to say it is a stock shifter stick that is bent but I don't think the boot is in a stock location. Eye the engine mounts at the cradle first. Then slip yoke install depth and whether it is an F body tilted tail housing.

Re: Stock t5 Shifter too close to the ash tray
The shifter looks too far forward to me to simply be mounted backwards. Thirdgen shifters don't have a bend in the shaft like that one does, so it may not be original/correct. Might be a mustang T5 shifter? Check the engine mounts as suggested, but if they were in the wrong location on the k member, the shifter would be too far towards the armrest, not the ashtray. The engine mounts for a V8 should be right at the front edge of the k member. The mounting location for the V6 is towards the back of the k member. It's likely not a thirdgen tailshaft housing on the trans that is causing the problem, as the main box dimensions are the same for all T5s. OEMs just swapped the tailshaft housing to match the vehicle the trans was going in.
