Richmond 3.42 Excel and TA Performance Cover

Hi all,
Just installed a richmond 3.42 excel gear set after my 2.73 started to whine and roar a lil under acceleration. The 3.42 woke it up quite a bit off the line. The factory posi is still holding up and launches pretty good.. does have a lil more tire spin with stock size tires but im ok with that for now. I
It has a 700 r4 with the 245 16" Iroc wheels and i will need speedo gears to correct the mph.

First question does anyone know if the 15 and 41t gears are the ones i need for the speedometer?

2nd question is after the gear install it does have some coast whine and a small amount around 45-60 mph when accel.. has quietend down some since last night but only drove for a day. Is this something that will get louder or maybe stay the same or get a lil more quiet?

3rd question - The diff cover i bought is a TA Performance with the load studs that put pressure on the bearing caps. One side does not touch the bearing cap before bottoming out. The other side sits just fine. I took both out and they are different lengths.. tried them in both sides to see if it changed anything and it doesnt.. one side still sits too low in the cover so i cant put the locking nut on... What gives? Think it was a mistake from TA performance?

To answer your second question, that is to be expected with the cheap gears. The Excell gears are Richmonds cheap line and you have to expect them to make noise.

For your thrid question, yes, they screwed up. They both shoud be the same length.

I thought so.. Being as they are richmond I figured they would whine since alot of ppl have had that problem now reading other posts...Also its not so bad that it bothers me or if im talking to somone while driving it would hinder the convo.

I thought so i sent them an email waiting for answer to see if they will send me a new stud.

Update:
Contacted TA performance and they are sending the correct size stud. So even though there was a problem they are taking care of it properlly and have no complaints about them.

The ring gear and pinion either doesnt seem to be making the same amount of noise or i have gotten use to it.. I can still hear it under accel at 45 pretty good. and on decel right before a stop. On the interstate it is very faint.

Not to get too far off topic...but would you say at this point that you are happy with the ratio choice? A good compromise between decent hwy. rpm and quicker acceleration? Or if you were doing it over, would you pick a different ratio?

Re: Richmond 3.42 Excel and TA Performance Cover

Well, being as this is a fairly stock car. with a wimpy mill and i drive it mainly to work and jus cruise around in with a lil spirited curvy road rides I didnt want to get away from my good gas milage that i had with the 2.73. I could get on the interstate and cruise at 65-75 at 1750 to 2100 rpm. After the change I havent been able to tell how fast im going due to the speedo gears not being right.( havent changed them yet) but i used my phone to show i was cruising at 70 with the (stock) tach showing 25 or 2600. (which could be off itself)

I thought it would be a world of difference going to the 3.42 which in ways it was. It didnt want to get out of its own way more less turn a tire over too much on dry pavement but now it will lay some nice rubber taking off. and it does run alot better through the gears.

I havent been able to check the gas milage since the speedo deal but It wouldn;t do much good right now because i also put a new exhaust on it along with this gear so i have been "playing" with the pedal a lil too much for gas milage. lol

I am pleased with it. I wouldnt go much lower than this 3.42... I would have prolly enjoyed a 3.23 just as well.
